Can anyone recommend a source for the suiting/lining material used? I have the appropriate cloth for our hunt’s vest, but need to supply the satiny material for the back. She would like the quality kind…not the Joanne Fabric type. Thanks!
Not sure what you mean by the “Joanne Fabric type” as I have bought many fine yards of silk and satin for many hunt vests, hunt ball gowns, and hunt coat linings. There are on-line vendors of silk and satin. Check the content of the fabric on the end of the bolt. Polyester silk-type blends are clearly marked as are 100% silk. Personally, I no longer use a silk or a satin for the back of a hunt vest as perspiration will eventually rot the natural fibers (I’ve replaced more than a few that have had that problem). As a foxhunter myself at a hunt in Michigan, I find the “thin silk back” of the vest problematic as when the wind is chill, the one place I want a good thick piece of wool is on my back! If you are working with someone at a warmer climate, suggest a cotton --if “too warm” is the concern then cotton would be cooler, I should think, than silk, and wear better.

Hi foxglove! I think she wants a high quality fabric, and was concerned the types in our local store would be not to her liking. I’ll check out Joanne’s. I thought maybe there were some other possibilities!
Thanks!!
You are correct that JoAnn stores can vary, as can their fabric. I just bought 5 yards of black silk velvet for this year’s hunt ball gown --it sat right next to the polyester velvet --nice, but not what I wanted.

I was told to use Bemberg rayon for the backing due to its breathability. I found it at JoAnnes.
Joann’s Casa satin is quite nice–decent quality, sews up very well, and comes in a variety of colors with matching lighter-weight fabrics (linings etc). The Casa collection is often on sale too so not too pricey. Joann’s also has some nice brocades for fancier backs (if that’s “allowed”). I’d stay away from their lower-quality fabrics like “costume satin,” acetates etc.
Thanks for all the leads! Next week’s project!!
IMHO its better to touchy feely the material at a local shop rather than buy thru mail order…and hope you get something nice
I’ve bought a lot of fabric online. I’ve rarely been disappointed. Some places do offer swatches. Unless I’m getting home dec fabric, (more $ & high yardage), rolling the dice has worked well and it is generally nicer stuff than JoAnn’s carries. I still shop JoAnn’s, but IME, things I’ve made with their stuff tends to end up with a more “home-made” look.
