Sourcing Pre-Fab Stalls and DIY Dutch Doors

I’ve got a contractor about ready to start on a barn gutting/remodeling/expansion project. We’ve agreed that I will supply stall kits and dutch doors.

As I Google and develop my own source list, do any of ya’ll have recommendations for suppliers? Some of my first hits have lovely webpages, but I’ve never heard of 'em…

Also, any DIY tips for creating dutch doors? I plan to make those myself.

TIA

Priefert is based in TX and makes a great prefab stall kit. They also have a scratch and dent location with deeply reduced prices but you have to go to them and pick up what you want, they won’t ship their scratch and dents. Depending on their proximity to you, you may be able to go to their warehouse and pick up what you need and save $$$ on shipping costs.

I also meant to add that we made our own Dutch doors off the back of each stall to open up into a dry lot area. I can take pictures and PM them to you for an idea of how they are put together. My husband did the actual labor so I’m not exactly sure what he used material- and hardware-wise but they look great and are holding up wonderfully! We went with Priefert stall kits and they include a sliding door for the stall fronts so that’s what we have on the front of our stalls.

I’d be very interested in hearing how your husband made those Dutch Doors & seeing pics.
I was quoted $1K  by my barnbuilder for adding another DD to the barn they put up for me 12yrs ago.
I am adding a mini to my Herd of 2 this Spring & would like to give him the option of a 1/2-size door so only he can access his stall from the paddock in case the 3 do not sing Kumbaya
Neighbors are building me a stall for him, but it would save a lot of me lading in & out if he had his own (mini)door.

I really loved my Priefert stalls. We may actually look at ripping out the stall fronts in this new barn and replacing with Priefert (but it’s not the first thing on our list, so … someday!!)

I also had Plyco dutch doors. I know you want to DIY, but the Plycos were really fantastic. But we did pay about $1k a piece for them. I think they’ll last FOREVER, though.

You can find instructions and materials lists on line. THEN, you can come back and tell the rest of us.

Love Dutch Doors.

I’ll try to get some pictures uploaded for y’all tonight. I promise our dutch doors did not cost anywhere near 1K and they’re nice and heavy duty! I’ll work on getting pictures now

The last barn we built (I miss my old barn! :() was turnkey, and yes, $1k per Dutch door is about right. It was, specifically, $480/partition. Hence, I’ll build my own this time!

Priefert is on my list. So is Ramm. Any reviews on Ramm? Lucas is out of my price range, though I have a neighbor who just put in some of their Euro style low-front stalls. Freaking gorgeous!

These guys are also out of TX, so they might be worth considering?

Take a hard look how each option opens. That was one thing I just LOVED about Priefert–the first bar on the door pulls down to unlatch the door. FAR prefer that to the sliding latch thing we have now.

Thanks Fgator!
I’ll look for your pics to show the crafty neighbors :encouragement:

Hmmmm… maybe a cheaper quote from barnbuilders for a half door - bottom section only?
They’re local to me, so no delivery/pickup needed.
Just have to check to make sure 13h Hackney Pony can’t limbo under there if he takes exception to the mini.

The pictures in the album are of the bottom section of the door only, we don’t have the top section for this door installed yet. It looks like for the “frame” of the door, my husband used a 4x4 for the upright sections of the frame with a 2x4 on the top and bottom sections of the frame. There may be more supports within the door itself but I can’t tell. On each side of the “frame” he used 1x6 boards, the same boards we used to line the stall walls. Everything is pressure treated and so far has held up well against my big TB who does not like being stalled  You could easily add cross bucks to the outside of the door to get that true Dutch door appearance, we opted not to because it would require us taking the whole door off at this point and moving around the hardware. No thanks! This door is HEAVY. We got hardware from either Home Depot or Lowes in the hardware department where all of the fencing hardware is located. Choose the heaviest hardware that you can find! In the album I also included pictures of our Priefert stall fronts and stall dividers for a visual.

Thanks!
That could be just what I need - crossbucks would be nice, but not necessary since existing DDs are wood inside metal so cannot recreate them exactly anyhow.
The mini DD will just be different.
I will show pics to neighbor when they get ready to start my stall.
We got the lumber for that from Lowe’s so s/b able to find the hardware there as well.
