Southern States No Longer Manufacturing Triple Crown Feeds

Sorry if this is a duplicate post but I couldn’t find any threads on this topic. I’ve just found out that Southern States will no longer be manufacturing Triple Crown feeds. Since I have all my guys on TC Senior I’m worried about availability. Any idea who will now be carrying them? I’m in Maryland.

No concerns, business as usual. Ask your feed store if they will continue to carry–just depends on the store.

SS ProElite line is an alternative, if you’d like.

I am still getting mine form Southern States.

“Stop manufacturing” is different from “stop selling”

Triple Crown still has a “Find A Dealer” page on their website.

Most dealers who carried Triple Crown will still be carrying it. Since Purina is now manufacturing for Triple Crown, Purina dealers, who did not have access to it before, may now be able to carry it.

Most SSs will no longer carry TC. After SS was bought by Cargill, TC made an agreement with Purina to mill and distribute their feeds. This means there’s no relationship between SS and TC anymore. That doesn’t mean a given SS can’t/won’t still get TC products.

This does mean TC will be available in more places now, given the Purina distributorship.

SS has the new ProElite line which is rolling out now. The ingredients and GA are high quality.

Thanks for the link to the other thread. Since my Purina dealer is a good bit closer to me than Southern States is, I’d be happy to see him start to carry Triple Crown products.

The Southern States dealers were all given the option to start a relationship with Purina so they could continue to carry Triple Crown. All the dealers in my area who carried Triple Crown previously still have it even though they were not Purina dealers before.

I know mine won’t be restocking TC when the current supplies run out.

I did hear that individual SS have the option of carrying it IF the bulk order is enough, which then obviously requires enough customers to keep the product fresh, so that is a pretty important deciding factor.

Purina purposely kept the order minimums as low as possible in order to retain as much current Triple Crown business as possible. Triple Crown dealers have experienced this before so it is nothing new to them.

FWIW, the numbers I heard were that the previous minimum order was 3 ton and the new minimum order is 5. I can see how turning over that much feed might be difficult depending on market.

I asked my local feed store if they were continuing to carry Triple Crown and the girl looked at me like I had three heads. They move A LOT of it  I don’t think the order minimums are a problem there!

Yes, those are the numbers I had heard too. My SS doesn’t move that much, so no TC. But that’s ok, I think I’ll be happy with the PE.

I was also told that Purina is requiring a 5 ton minimum order on Triple Crown products, which no dealer in this area would ever be able to sell in a timely fashion.

Five tons is the standard minimum in the feed industry. Southern States stores also have the option of buying Triple Crown from their hard goods warehouse that supplies the rest of their needs. It was routed this way in order for the smaller dealers to be able to have access to Triple Crown without the five ton minimum.

The reality of the feed business is no dealer wants to lose any equine business as there is no “new” equine business to be had, only the switching of customers from one brand to another. The equine industry has not grown in the past 9-10 years, and is in fact declining, so dealers want to hang onto the customers they have.

And again, this is not the first rodeo for Triple Crown dealers. I went through it first hand when Cargill started manufacturing for them.
