Speaking of stallions

I am a bit of a pack rat I guess. Found this stallion inspection tour list while going through some boxes that have been stored in my barn loft since moving from Lexington. They’re all gone saddly. Makes me feel even older.

Taking clients around to inspect stallions is SOP for Lexington based Bloodstock agents. I did countless ones through out the year. Can still visualize most of them I saw them so many times. Took a lot of pictures with clients with the horses. Wish I had been smart enough to ask them to take a picture with me and all of the greats. I would have had a really cool collection. American based, European, South American, Ausy and NZ.

This “tour” was in the mid 80s.

That would have been a heck of a group of stallions to see, especially over just a few days.

Wow, what a tour that was! Thanks for sharing. I loved Miswaki when he was here in Maryland. I think my Phone Trick gelding still has the track record at Penn National from 1996 but haven’t checked in years.

I wonder how many stallions of this time will be as great as the huge number of great ones from back then. There are relatively few “forgettable stallions” on your list.

I love the tour schedule. What a great group of stallions to see.

Wow, that’s just stunning. I saw Claiborne, Shadwell broodmare division), and WinStar about 5 years ago and I was starstruck then (meeting Tiznow and Pulpit were the highlights). I would have been agog at that tour.

Wow.

What do you remember about Private Account? What did he look like and do you recall learning anything about his temperament?

Think you owe Nyquist (retiring as a 3yo with 11 starts), and racing, an apology.

 Wasn’t Gumtree referring to horses seen on stallion tours, not racing superstars?

Am I missing something?

Thanks Gumtree, for sharing those memories. How great it must have been to have seen them and now knowing that you’ve seen some giants of the breed.

really neat!!

Of recent, the odds of being truly successful are not as favorable.

Those are racing superstars.

Point taken.

That was going to be part 2. Thanks you saved me a lot of time checking facts.

Also a number of the stallion raced in Europe. Don’t see that much anymore. Kind of fallen out of favor.

Here is a picture of Tapit with a good friend of mine over from Ireland. Taken the other day. Doesn’t really look like “$300,000”. Could be any grey horse by and large.

This is picture of a little stakes winner by Tapit out of a Phone Trick mare that we bred. No, we did not pay $300,000. We bred to him when he was “on the bubble” first crop would be 2 year olds when we went to auction. We paid $10,000.

What very kewl things you’ve done, GT.

Thanks for all the kind replies. We comment on some when I have more time.

I have’t heard “kewl” in a long time. Brings back memories of road trips with one of my best friends who is no longer with us. We used to have a LOT of fun together. He was an old rock n roll buddy and still wore his hair long. A big guy, great drummer and singer. He’d came to visit during during the Keeneland sales. Knew little to nothing about horses but dug the scene and was a quick student. . I made him out to be a new big client of mine. He played the part really well. Had everybody buying him drinks. Good thing, he never had any money.

Thanks!

 and for me, I love reading from those “in the business” as opposed to loving watching racing from when I was little but just as a spectator. Santa Anita and Hollywood Park were where I got to go a few times. Belmont Park once. Keeneland and Churchhill Downs not during racing season. Keeneland the day after the Spring meet closed, Churchill Downs before the Spring meet started (i.e., in Lexington for Rolex a few times).

I have a lovely water color (it looks like) print of Keeneland with the horses coming off the far turn and all the trees in flower. And a Secretariat print “At The Belmont” autographed by Tony Leonard.

Closest I got to the greats

Keeneland’s closing weekend is usually during the weekend of Rolex (closes on Friday), if you’re here for Rolex I definitely recommend hitting up Keeneland for at least a few races if you get the chance.
