Speaking of XC times--smart watch?

I know smart phones aren’t allowed on XC, but are there any rules yet related to smart watches?

I was just wondering, since an optimum time watch is $100+, but you could get a basic smart watch with a big face for ~$50 (I was even looking at the kid watches, which would probably fit a smaller wrist).

I didn’t know smart phones aren’t allowed on XC. Then again I am not doing recognized yet.
I keep my SmartPhone in a holster on my calf. When I was at St. Augustine I used RoadID to map my ride.

I would like to find a better watch of some kind. I had to quick buy one to keep track of start times for the 3 events I did. Pulling out my SmartPhone wasn’t cutting it. I would like to find a children’s size watch. The one I got is an adult size and a bit uncomfortable for my small wrist.

I would consider an inexpensive Smart watch.

Using any cell phone (smart or not) or radio while competing is prohibited-- I assume it’s to prevent unauthorized assistance. I have yet to see a smartwatch that I wouldn’t kill in an hour at a horse show, though. Even the Timex Expeditions don’t last me forever.

My first timex expedition lasted a long time, considering I often dunked it in a wash bucket. My second one I stopped wearing when I got my fitbit, but as far as I know it is still alive and kicking.

Sonnysmom, here is the kid’s watch I was looking at–adjusts to wrist of 7.75 in.

I think you would have to find a retail store that carried them so that you could play with it to see how well it worked for timing XC. Plus it has kiddie games!

Interesting. If it was used passively, as an interface for recording biometrics in relation to course?

I’ve had mine stuck in a pocket so I can record the track and pace for later review. It would seem to be very hard to use it with communication, but I do understand the idea of banning for such.

The rule says

EV116 Radios and Cellular Phones
The use of a radio or cellular phone while competing is forbidden, under penalty of disqualification. Any other use while on the competition grounds by competitors, trainers, or members of the competitor’s support group, is subject to restriction by the technical delegate and the president of the ground jury.

So check with the TD or PoGJ.

kcmel: is there a reason you want a SmartWatch or you just don’t want to pay $100+ for Ultimate Event watch? If you just want an inexpensive, large faced timing watch, do what I did and buy a Champion Sports Jumbo Timer watch. It’s $19.99 and has all the features of the Event Watch. You’re welcome

Thanks Lusoluv! I have one of the cheaper ones that Dover use to sell, but actually haven’t gotten it out of the box yet, since I am currently only doing unrecognized. But I will check out your suggestion in case I don’t like the one I have (I think it got some pretty bad reviews, hence the clearance price).

I have a fenix 3 and this thing is glued to my wrist. Smash it on barn doors, fully submersible while scrubbing buckets and hosing down, phone notifications, tracks my heart rate, speed/distance, timer feature, etc.

That said, it was a complete splurge item that my husband gifted me. My previous non-smartwatch was a Timex I used to compete with ($50 at Walmart) and did a great job as a competitive training aid.
