Specific cubbing attire question

I have never been hunting (during cubbing or regular formal season) but plan to eventually go so I’ve read the guidebook on MOFA’s website (suggested by the Master of my local hunt) and am browsing various types of apparel. Just to look. The Master said they typically wear white, yellow, or light blue shirts during cubbing season, with either a collar or a colored stock tie w/ gold pin, or even an oxford shirt with a colored tie (all options in addition to a tweed coat).

So I’m curious, if you wear a colored shirt (yellow or blue), does your colored stock tie have to be the same color as the shirt? What if someone wore a light blue shirt and a champagne colored stock tie? Would that be appropriate?

Specifically this tie in champagne (not white)…I think it’s pretty. Is that tie appropriate or is it not the colored stock tie that the hunt is looking for (does “colored” mean blues, pinks, greens, stronger yellows?).

Thanks

Anything other than white is ‘colored.’ And no tie and shirt don’t need to be the same color. Here are some of Liz Callar’s photos from a year ago, cubhunting at Middleburg, which might give you a pretty good idea.

No one cares. Just tidy and conservative.
I think a lady looks partciularly cute in a men’s tie and button down. I have a peach button down and a green tie, dark green show coat and rust breeches.

Nobody will care. Particularly nobody will care because with a stock tie on you can’t see the color of your shirt.

I won’t try to tell you what combinations of colors might be coordinate well together, or go well with your jacket. Some people have a good eye for that and somehow always look well put together, but even people with a good eye probably can’t impart that to others in black and white text.

At our hunt riders seem to have fun with Cubbing attire --last week there were a number of tie-dye and one paisley stock ties. Some ties were pastel but most were fall hues. Breeches ran color spectrum from rust to beige, with some dark browns and (my own) green. Coats were generally tweeds, both light and dark. There were a few brown boots. I wore a dark green shirt, man’s burgundy tie in a full Windsor knot with a stick pin, a black vest, olive breeches, and a tan tweed with a hint of green in it. It is the only time of the year I can wear my New Market boots, which my russet brown leather gloves matched well. Next week I will for the 48th year, wear my cubbing outfit my mother bought me the first time I hunted. At the time it was quite fashionable: Madras Plaid hunt coat (really!) with rust breeches, and a light green shirt with a dark green stock tie. I know the outfit sounds dreadful, but over the years the Madras has mellowed and now looks better than ever. And I must say I do take a bit of delight in still fitting into clothes I wore when I was 14 years old! I wish my lovely mare I hunted then had lasted as long as my hunt clothes.

Foxglove

I would wear a man’s tie if I could tie one competently. (I know, it’s a skill I should have mastered by now). And Foxglove, we must have pictures! The mellowed Madras sounds wonderful.

Love it!

But, I’d say “no” on the pre-tied dressage style stock tie link. Not that it is terrible, I just wouldn’t recommend buying it for hunting purposes. A plain riding shirt with a wrap collar or a choker would be a better option for cub hunting, if you have it.

If you are planning to buy a stock tie for hunting, I would recommend first buying a plain white (not pre-tied) stock tie. Something like this: https://www.smartpakequine.com/rj-classics-platinum-collection-stock-tie-5294p

For a colored stock tie, just to get ideas or if you want to have fun with it, take a look at:

Mostly, just have a great time!

Foxglove, gorgeous! Madras coat, rust breeches and Newmarket boots…rockin the cubbing runway

Thanks for all the responses! So nice to hear about different combinations of coats, shirts, vests, and breeches.

Hunter’s Rest- the posted outfit sounds lovely. Do you have any photos of it all put together?

And Foxglove- how neat!! What a fantastic tradition. And yes- definitely must feel good to be able to wear that same outfit year after year.

2foals- Thanks for the link to Jodie’s Stock Ties. I had NO idea there were so many options! So cool!

I think traditional hunt attire (for cubbing or formal) is just gorgeous and so classy- I am just still learning about the do’s and don’t’s!

There’s a far-away pic of me in that getup on ‘page 2’ of my ‘photos’ bar on my website, but its pretty far off so you can’t really see the peach.
Sincerely, I get it that we want to be adorable close-up, but honestly, I cannot say I’ve ever particularly noticed ‘what’ someone is wearing other than ‘OMG that’s so cute!’ Never have I thought, or even noticed, something that’s not chic or fully matchy-matchy, or whatever.
Clean, tidy and smile-y. That’s all in the world we’re looking for.

Love it! I also love your Newmarket boots. You don’t see those that often these days and they are just lovely.

I wear a man’s tie for cubbing. If you look closely it’s covered in tiny cartoon characters. Wile E. Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, etc. I got it at Wal-Mart for 3$.

I have been told (and those who know where I work will know who has told me!) tha’s the absolute most correct turn out for cubbing is a shirt and neck tie. This is actually my favorite, favorite look and my go to on the occasions when I actually get to participate! (Hopefully next year…) That being said, colored stocks are considered more than appropriate for most hunts that I know of, and if you read the handy little book about it all, it says stock or neck tie. Please no pre ties. It is NOT hard to tie a stock!

Some will wear show shirts with chokers, but it really isn’t appropriate, and I would strongly advise against it past your first time or two out (if you plan to pursue he sport in earnst, that is).

As always check with the hunt your are planning to ride with. Several hunts hunt in polo shirts and britches in cubbing season.

Lovely!!! And I so wish I had been riding and hunting when I lived in Battle Creek!
