I will be about 30 min from Lühmuhlen Horse trials while they are going on this summer. DH is not horsey, but will tolerate horsey activities with the right motivation. Is Lühmuhlen very spectator friendly, or should I save up my “Come with me to one big horse event” card for something else like the Kentucky 3 Day, or the RRP final?
A 5* is a big event with the very top riders and horses and large crowds to see them, supported by a village of food and shopping opportunities. People and dog watching is great fun. There are supporting activities and displays to fill spare space or time. I don’t think your husband would be bored at all but, if necessary, he could always sit in one place and eat good German food and drink excellent German beer. Go! You may not have another chance to be there.
I’ll be there as well!! I moved to Germany last year so I am excited to be going. I will be going alone as my SO says that horse events are not his thing. I’m about 3 hours away so I’m making the drive up. I haven’t gone before either so glad this thread popped up.
Looks like half the 5* field consists of top UK and UK-based riders who withdrew or retired at Badminton. Really classy field.
Are you driving there? It’s hard to get to on public transit. Otherwise, it’s a super fun event.
I’d say very spectator friendly if he likes German festivals in general (food, beer, music, beautiful surroundings). I don’t remember what shopping was like, that wasn’t horse-oriented, but I wasn’t there to shop.
Beautiful venue and course.
I haven’t been to LKR3D or RRP, but between the two venues, I think it would be nicer to walk around the Luhmuhlen course as a non-horse person than the KHP course.
I was wondering if they added a way to get there on public transport. I went about eight years ago and definitely needed a car. It was also easy enough to find accommodations not too far away.
Overall, it is a more compact site than Burghley, LR and Badminton. There wasn’t a huge shopping village, though they had food trucks and a small row of vendor tents. But, there were multiple tack shops on the drive there.
Very nice volunteers, easy to find and navigate, and a beautiful venue and area!
You will definitely need a car to get there but it is a super fun event, enthusiastic crowd, pimms tent and good beer and food for your non horsie friend. It is not Kentucky or B/B in the sense that there is not the extensive shopping - but there IS a couple of great tack stores about 5 minutes away : )
Have fun!
I think there are 4 German entries in the 5*(27 GB); the 4* is their National Championship. (1 GB entry)

We will definitely be driving there. I got the hotel booked this weekend, and have forewarned DH that I will make him go to a tack store with me! He’s still rolling his eyes about the whole thing, but I’m super excited to go!
It has been a few years since i went, but I had to walk the last 1/2-1 mile or so.
My husband and I arrived a little early and were driving around with me begging to stop at every tack store. I’ve never been to WEF or any of the other truly big shows, but Reitsport Michaelis is the biggest tack store I’ve ever seen. It was mind blowing just how much tack they had in there! I should have brought an emptier suitcase!
