Spin Off: How do you wash your sunshirts?

I use a special detergent designed for technical fabrics. (I bought Hex, because it was available at my local grocery store, but there are a few other similar products: http://laundry.about.com/od/laundrydetergentreviews/tp/Product-Reviews-Active-Wear-Laundry-Detergents-Sportswear-Laundry-Detergents.htm)

I don’t use the special detergent every wash, but pull it out when my shirts start to smell.

In terms of cycle, I just run them on a normal warm water cycle with the rest of my clothes and hang them to dry.

oxyclean detergent:

Nukes even the worst boy stink. I have a top loader, so every so often I will toss a little borax in the wash and everything comes out sparkling. I wash in cold water unless something is stained. Never had a stink problem with this stuff and I also wear tons of sunshirts and wash them constantly. I even toss mine in the dryer.

My husband is a marathon runner and motocross rider. I think I’ve forgotten what he looks like NOT soaked in sweat. This stuff takes care of all of it, from mud to horse stink to the worst boy butts imagineable.

I wish they made a free and clear, detergents with fragrance or color makes me ITCH.

I used to baby all my sun shirts in cold water and hang dry. Now I wash with warm/hot water with a vinegar rinse and throw them in the dryer. I haven’t noticed any damage to the shirts.

If mine are particularly stinky and/or stained, I do a soak cycle in warm water, and then a second normal wash. I use Tide Free and Clear and don’t have any smell issues. I also hang dry.

Everyone is doing this vinegar thing but me. WHO KNEW?!

I haven’t done it…but if my shirts get particularly stinky, I will have to give it a try.

I do always wonder about walking around knowing that I stink. That is my one big criticisms about these shirts. Not sure why it is acceptable that they smell so bad when I wouldn’t wear anything that did the same to the gym or in the rest of my life…

Talk about stinky - I don’t understand the evil magic of hairnets.

How can such a tiny amount of fabric contain such a magnitude of terrible smell??

I love All detergent with stainlifters - Oxi.

Wash in cold with ONLY my clothes. I don’t add anyone else’s clothes or towels etc. And hang dry. I hang dry all my clothes.

The shirts seem to hold up to washing and use very well. I notice the Kastel shirts will snag more than other sun shirts. So I just am a bit more careful of leaning up against a wood door etc.

Also don’t leave them damp in the washer after the load is done. Certainly not overnight. They will get musty smelling.

I think warm wash gets them cleaner than cold and doesn’t seem to harm the synthetics.

wash mine with gain, warm water, and dry in the dryer. ~SOMETIMES~ i will air dry them, but not usually. always come out smelling great! i don’t own any kastels, but i do this on my TS as well as my show Essex shirts.

if they are stained i spray with shout and they come clean for me.

I spray rubbing alcohol on my hairnet and helmet immediately after removing and leave both hanging up to dry. Helps a ton with the gross helmet smell.

I started using the vinegar because I got a front load washer and it would stink! The vinegar keeps the washer clean and helps remove odors from clothes.

I just use white vinegar and it works fine, I’m not sure if ACV would work better. I put it in the fabric softener compartment.

Question to the people who are washing their Kastels in warm water have you found them to shrink?

I wash all our technical stuff in warm water, cold rinse, Oxiclean in the wash, white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment every couple washes. Occasionally an extra rinse. (We have hard water and if the minerals build up in the fabric, they hold odors and stain even worse than normal). I almost always hang dry (inside the house this time of year, since we’re in FL).

Interesting whenever I wash technical stuff in warm water it shrinks. Heck sometimes it even shrinks when I wash it in cold water!
