Spin Off: How do you wash your sunshirts?

I am completely in love with my Kastel shirts. Currently riding in 95-100 degree temps and 4-5 horses, I soak them through. My cold water cycle just isn’t getting the sweat smell all the way gone. I wash DH work out clothes on the hottest/longest cycle possible.

Since the instructions state cold water only, how do you get your shirts smelling fresh and clean?

A scoop of oxy powder (in addition to the detergent) and cold water. It’s how I wash all my sweaty horse and tennis stuff.

Cold water, detergent, and a splash of apple cider vinegar, which I do with every load, every wash, every time. It doesn’t leave a vinegar smell and zaps all odors like musty towels, boy butts, and sweat filled sun shirts.

Ditto! Plus air dry, bonus points if you can do it outside, it gives that nice fresh, clean smell.

I have had these shirts for a long time, soak them with sweat and always wash in warm/hot water. I’ve never had a problem doing that and they always come out very clean and smelling great.

I’ve been doing Oxy Clean and a scoop of Downy Unstoppables. Not everyone likes scented stuff, but I like them. They seem to help clothes stay fresher at work as well. Sometimes when things get more intense at work, I am afraid I have that nervous sweat smell and this makes me feel a little better.

Wash them in cool water (inside a delicates bag) and hang them to dry out doors.

Warm water gentle wash, hang dry. If that’s not getting it done, add some oxyclean, let them soak and/or do a pre-wash, and don’t put too many other items in the wash with them.

I wash mine in warm water and hang them outside on the line to dry. I do that with all my sun shirts no matter what brand they are.

I use white vinegar in my rinse cycle, and that has kept the smell at bay. If I haven’t been doing that and/or a shirt has a very strong odor, I will pre-treat with the vinegar (usually just need to do the underarms). The vinegar doesn’t leave a scent behind, and they smell fresh.

Those of you who use vinegar, do you use it with a front loader? Do I put it in the bleach compartment?

You can’t hang them outside in TX as they will never dry.

Sometimes on gentle, sometimes on a regular cycle depends on what I need to wash. But always on warm/hot wash with a cold rinse. Put in the dryer for a few minutes on low then hang dry.

I’m intrigued by the apple cider vinegar in the wash!

Ditto this…how to I add ACV?

I soak overnight in vinegar and hot water, then wash in hot with a little detergent and as much vinegar as fits in the bleach compartment.

Yes and yes. I use white vinegar when I wash towels, but I’m intrigued by the idea of using it when washing sun shirts. I usually wash mine on cold and hang them (inside) to dry, and the smell doesn’t linger. But I just got back from a show with a show shirt that is so horribly stinky I was considering just throwing it away. I’ll try washing it w/ vinegar and see if that saves it.

True story, I learned about apple cider vinegar when we brought home a new puppy who liked to mark our dirty clothes. I threw several things away until I realized we would soon be naked. The ACV tip from Google worked so well I use it on everything now.

Wash cold with a laundry detergent pack, oxyclean, and the scent boosters (with the rest of my dirty riding clothes). Then I hang dry.

I use the apple cider vinegar in a front loader, but I read (somewhere…who knows where) to put it in the fabric softener compartment so that’s what I do. Works well that way for me.

On COTH advice a while back on stained/stinky Talent Yarns I switched to warm from cold with a splash of detergent and OxyClean. Big improvement going to warm from cold and no damage.

I don’t have a front loader. I fill the fabric softener compartment on my top loaded with the vinegar.
