Spin off: How long does your hunt generally stay out?

The first hunt I started with stayed out around 2-2:30 hrs, 3hrs max. Covering 4-7 miles on average. PMD hounds

The second hunt I went out with stayed out 4 hours max with the first huntsman, this one 4-5 hours is a short hunt…6-7 hours is a long one. It is not unusual to have people come in before the hounds. Covering 12-17 miles on average. Cross bred pack.

So how long do you stay out?

2 to 2:30 hours like clock work.

Most of our fixtures are on the small side so 2 to 2 1/2hrs are typical. One is a larger fixture and if the scent is good we might stay out there between 3 and 4 hours.

In my youth our fixtures (in Md) were huge and 5-6 hours was fairly typical. (My older body is now happy with smaller fixtures!)

Our Wednesday hunt tends to run 2-2.5 hours for both fields. The weekend hunt will run 3 hours though the Hilltoppers often excuse themselves at about 2 hours.

At one recent hunt both fields were only out an hour and a half. It was a barn burner hunt. In that time the first field went 9 miles and the Hilltoppers were just under 7 miles.

3 hours, unless hounds are hunting at the 3 pm mark in which case we’ll see the hunt through.

Usually 2.5-3 hrs.

3-4 1/2 hours. Hard to tell this season. The weather and footing has been awful. More short days.

Generally, about 4 hours on average. Usually, we average around 20 miles from what I’ve seen on everyone’s GPS things.

On average, during cubbing, 2-3 hours, and during formal season, 3.5-4.5 hours. Sometimes 5-6 hours if we are running like crazy and end up very far away from the meet, but those are rare days.

Same as SidesaddleRider.

The footpack stays out 2 hours. (hunting cottontail rabbit).

Well, when I first started in 1971, 6-8 hours was common, put a sandwich in your pocket and go, and a ‘short’ formal day was 4 hours.

I think the last 8 hour day I had was with Red Rock. In the early 90s, Loudoun/ Loudoun West met at 1 pm on Sundays and I recall coming back to the meet after dark a few times.

I do remember very reluctantly pulling out in the middle of a helluva day after 4+ hours at Warrenton behind the late Michael Power, since I had to beat the school bus home, fetch kid, go teach a class at church. I cut it so close that I simply taught the class in my hunting togs, with the horse hanging out munching hay in the trailer in the church parking lot. I was not excommunicated and the kids got a kick out of it.

Sadly, diminishing hunt country does limit a lot of hunts to a couple of hours to four hours max these days. Which, for me, does have a bearing on whether I schlepp my kit somewhere, go through the expense of hiring a horse and capping, for just a couple of hours. Car following is the less expensive option there.

We are generally out 2.5-3 hours, occasionally longer. The one time I wore a GPS we covered almost 20 miles. I should wear it again before the season is over.

3 to 6 hours in East TN on mostly coyote.
10-20 mile days twice a week.

In England the hunts were endless - until dusk very often. There were long waits in between runs and I found them quite tiring, and cold, despite my being younger.

At our hunt here it is a drag and about 2+ hours is common. If we go up-country, a couple of times a year, they stay out longer. Land, again, is the problem with increasing build-up. There is not an ages old tradition of hunting here and a lot of landowners don’t want people on their land.

Generally in the saddle right at three hours. That counts a 10-15 minute hack between trailers and covert. Were we out for much longer, I should need a larger flask.

We are out 3 to 3.5 hours. Less during cubbing. It has been up to 5 1/2 and sometimes 1 1/2. Depends on how things go. Hunts are generally 8 to 12 miles but some have been over 20. I carry a GPS almost every time.

Four hours average, usually covering 15 to 25 miles. Some days five or six hours or really blank sucky days three.

1.75 hours to 3.5 hours. Cover 8-12 miles on average.
