Spin-off: What size blankets are your youngsters wearing??

After reading and commenting on the blanketing a weanling thread, and blanketing my own tonight due to inclement weather arriving, I got to thinking of the size blankets my youngsters those age 4 and younger wear.

My just about 5 month old colt is just and I mean just fitting into a 54 inch blanket. thankfully We have a 57 for him to grow into!

My 4 your old large pony gelding, well tonight he’s kind of swimming in a 72-the side length, so I’ll have to purchase him a 70. Just the sides are too long for him, other than that it fits him pretty well.

My 3 year old Dutch gelding, he’s in a 72 but it’s a bit too short for him, on the butt and sides so i have to get him a 74-76 as he’s growing again.

His one month older 1/2 sister, she’s in a 82, yes and 82! They share the same sire, Their dams are the same height but her dam is a brute of a mare-she’s a WB cross but she’d kick-ass in a halter class. A tank. Mind you this 3 year old filly is still growing too and stands 16.2.

Thankfully we have the bigger sizes it’s the smaller ones I have to pick up. Most of my mares are 76-78 with a few on the 80+ range and one who’s an 88-but she’s a 17.2 hand Irish mare.

So I was just curious if I am the only one with big babies, I wager to guess I am not.

54" on a 5-month old? What’s his breeding? That’s pretty small! Is he a pony weanling?

My 2011 filly was wearing a 60" Weatherbeeta (so more like a 62-63 in other brands) when she was 6 months old, and she was not a big girl - I think she measured around 12.3hh at that point… but she was solid, and wide. OldenburgxSaddlebred cross.

My 4.5 yr old gelding (same breeding, different ASB dam though) is 16.1hh+ and wears a 75/76 blanket. He’s quite narrow and dainty, LOL.

Thankfully he can share/swap blankets with my tanky 15.2hh full Saddlebred mare, who wears the same size (and fills them out better! ).

Last year’s weanling took a 63. This year he’s got a 74 if he needs it, but measures more like 72.

My warmblood/TB 5 1/2 month old is only in a 53" blanket. She came to me though VERY underweight and wormy and is MUCH smaller than my usual warmblood foals of similar age (she is currently 12.2HH and that was AFTER growing lots this past month). She is finally starting to fill out a bit as she had no secondary fat to speak of. I guess we will see if she will make her height up a bit later as her dam is 16HH and sire 17.2HH. Fingers crossed she will make her dam’s height anyhow with good nutrition from here on out. Most of my previous weanlings have worn a 58-60" blanket by mid winter in the past.

My 2yr old (16HH) wears a 78" blanket and the rest are mature horses of various blanket sizes.

ABS he is a big boy, he’s 13 hands (I just sticke dhim at the hip last week and at his head when he stand up he’s taller than me-I am 5’6") and ALL legs. He’ll be at or over 17 hands when he’s done. his 1/2 siblings except the one I mentioned above were in 48’s as weenie babies and they are closing in or over 16hands as 3 year olds.

…?? What brand of blankets are you using?? The smallest weanling i’ve ever owned wore a 56" at 5 months, and she finished at 15.3hh, she was teenie!

My 15 hand 7month old colt is in a size 66 right now. He does have a tiny bit of room but not too much, he was clipped to show so I could show him at the beginning of the month, so he is actually blanketed. My filly is about 5.5 months old and about 13.2 or was when I measured her last, she is a compact KWPN and has a size 60 blanket. She is growing a nice fuzzy coat so will not be blanketed unless they are calling for ice rain or a lot of snow!

My 8 month old TB is in a 63" and will most likely need to bump up in the near future. She measured 14.1 1/2 at 7 months.

My 2011 wore a 60" last year

She’s measuring at a 69" right now and is 14.3…she’s an April baby

My 2011 isn’t blanketed right now but wore a 74" sheet to the Pa Hunter Breeder’s Futurity. Hopefully that will still fit in February when she gets clipped!

My 2011 is wearing a 66" right now, but she is an Arabian, so not atypical. She is getting quite a bit taller, but still hasn’t elongated or filled out yet.

My 2010 gelding is in the same size! He’s HA (7/8th Arab, 1/8th paint)

My 4 1/2 month old walking horse is in a 57 and it just fits. She will need the next size up before winter is over.

My 2.5 Y/O gelding is wearing an 81 and it’s a bit big on him, but a 76 was too small and he’s growing so I went for a bit bigger. That way it should still fit him in a few months! Haven’t sticcked him in a while but he’s about 16.2

My 17 month old (14.2hh) is wearing a 66" with it begining to be on the small side.
My 18 month old (15.3hh and all legs!) is wearing a 72".
My 2 1/2 yr old is wearing a 80" (she is a half sister to the one above)
