Spin Off: What's your horse's Show name?
DC I didnt see “Fish” on your list :)
OMG! Steve would kill me if I revealed Randy’s “other” barn name. He about blows a head gasket whenever I use it.

My prelim guy is What the Heck or “Sam” in the barn. It was the name he was given. My new OTTB’s race name was Private Pleasure (sounds dirty!), so I renamed him Oh So Extreme, because right now, everything he does is to the extreme.
A friend has a TB stallion named Unexpected Pleasure and they call him “UP” for short. Talk about dirty!

Cold Harbor - Bo came from Canada with the name Hobo - I could sort of see it looking at his 3 year old photos - tall, skinny and scruffy. His previous owners named him Emmett Kelly (and there are some of us out there who will get the connection) but when he came to use he was not so scruffy anymore. My son is a serious American Civil War student and re-named him Cold Harbor - a significant confederate victory in the “wah of nahthun agression”.

The Big Easy - almost 18 hand draft cross. Nuff said.

The Medicine Man - medicine hat paint. aka JEB. another civil war reference.

The Ice Queen - exactly how she is around the barn. Hellacious on the polocrosse field. Belligerent otherwise.

Chima (shee-mah) - from the brazilian portuguese for chimaroa meaning bitter taste. A drink similiar to mate’ served in the Rio Grande du Sol region of southern Brazil said to have restorative powers. Chima came to us as a replacement for Andrew’s beloved and much missed polocrosse mare Cadillac.

DC. . . Fish??

My mare’s barn name is Heart. She has a white heart on her forehead. Her registered name with the Jockey club is Living Time. I didn’t love it, didn’t seem to be her so her show name is “Crazy on You” like the song by Heart. I humm that song in my head when we go cross country! In my wildest dreams we would be coming to the finish at rolex and my husband would be holding up a boom box blaring that song! Haha.

My mare’s JC name is Suspended–she’s by the stallion Expelled–but that makes her sound like a juvenile delinquent (although that’s appropriate at times). Her barn name was Cassie, and I wanted to find a show name that incorporated that somewhat.
After googling my little heart out, I found “Cassata,” which sounds all formal and respectable (and kinda dressagey, I think) but is actually some fluffy, fruity Italian dessert. My mare is the definition of fruity, so Cassata it is.

 1. Name sake and the ol’man of the farm is Backgammon (the Handsome-ist Bay of all). Came with that name; showed under that name. Call him Gammers or Moo-Moo or royal PITA.

 2. JC name: North Chill (Cool x Delta Sky); Show name: Learnin’ To Fly; barn name Charlie or Chuck or Idiot.

 3. 4 yr old rescue: was Donatello; Show name: Free Fallin’; Barn name Toby or Bigin’

 4. Just aquired (from an auction) a cute Paint pony. Coggins has his name as 274??? Huh,? Cowboy Joe that I got him from called him “the Colt” even though he is gelded. Yeah. Ok. So now he is Marshall 274. Couldn’t find a Tom Petty song to call him…

DC. . . Fish??
When Randy was born he couldn’t stand up on his own. Down he was fine, up he was fine, but the transition from down-to-up just wasn’t happening. He would try so hard and end up either spinning in a circle like a one-legged water bug or flopping around like a trout on dry land. Every hour on the hour for eight days either Steve or I would have to go help him up. I started referring to this as “going to hoist the fish.” I chronicled my ichthyological hoisting adventures on the AR2 chat list and the name Fish started to stick. Steve was not at all pleased with this nickname and said he wanted to name him after Carol K’s husband. I just couldn’t argue my way out of that one, so Fish became Randy.

That’s funny, yet creative. I wonder if they are related in some way?

My guy’s barn name is Reno. He is registered as “Gone Forever”, which I thought sounded depressing, so I show him as “Folsom Blues” from the Johnny Cash song Folsom Prison Blues because there’s a line in there that says “I shot a man in Reno”… and because I loved Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line!

My current boy is “Raison D’Etre” Extremely fitting…(barn name, Aaron)

former horses:
“Malachi”
“Don’t Tell Daddy” (barn name, Erin)

JC Names

With all the talk of JC names, I have to add this as they MUST be the worst JC names ever!!! My mare Quin’s dam was Scrambled Eggs and my gelding Dylan’s dam was Chicken Chateau… really really awful!!

However, it gave me an idea, a brilliant thought really, that I’d finally be able to answer that age old question!! A quick look at the pedigree site shows that Chicken Chateau was born in 1985 but Scrambled Eggs DOB is unknown… So sadly, I still can’t answer which came first… the Chicken or the Egg!!

Sorry, I’m easily entertained…

Flower’s Girl - well played. One can typically tell the relative age of horses by looking at their dentition. Though chickens don’t have teeth, either.
One of my OTTB ran as Just Brody - now he’s The Brogue after a horse in an H H Munroe story.
There’s also one who ran as Bad Boy Eric who is now billed as 'Andsome Eric - he doesn’t need any encouragement to be bad.
Loyal - an L line Hanovarian - shows as Loyal.

Bachelor of Arts… barn name “Stitch”.

He came with both of these and I just kept them as he’s a registered Appendix QH.

His sire is Artful Move, hence the reason for “art” in his name. I wanted to change his barn name but it stuck… and it fits him. And there isn’t another one out there that I know of! So at least it’s original.

DC-I wondered where you got the name Arlington Park! How is Tex doing?

Let’s see…ours are pretty simple…

Current horses:
Ginisee, OTTB, it’s her JC name, we liked it so we used it as her show name too. Around the barn we call her Gin or Ginny.

Uma, 3/4 Tb 1/4 Shire. She came with her barn name, Uma. Registered name and show name is Javah. We named her Javah because she’s brown, a smooth, liquid mover, and just hot enough to make things interesting!

Reilly, parentage unknown. He came with the name Teddy and we called him that for awhile. He was a rescue and terribly thin when he arrived. Watching him wolf down hay my daughter said “He’s really living the life of Reilly, isn’t he?” The name stuck. Show name will be “Life of Reilly”.

Past horses:
Pete, quarter/morgan hunter pony, show name was Peter Pan and it suited him. He was 16 when we bought him and still not a grown up!

Striker, aka Mosaic Minstrel. See Canterlope’s entry on Arlington Park! He came to us with the names so we kept them.

Murphy, JC registered Ezacawee! Yikes! Barn name Murphy, show name changed to Babu’s Charm.

Sky, paint gelding, registered Sonny’s Poco Robin. Previous owners called him Robo. We just couldn’t do it. Changed his barn name to Sky and we never got to show the poor guy.

P.S. It’s fun drawing Tex’s markings for his coggins, isn’t it DC? lol

Here are just a few of my many

Orbits Just Right—barn name “Orbit” or Grand ol man—cause he’s 23 and the grand ol man of my fleet of ponies

Grand Survival-- barn name “Gus” million dollar two year old I got for free off the track

Deputy Alydar-- barn name “Aly”-- another freebie we sometimes call him “Aly Oop”

Mr. Wicked Britches-- the meanest Connemara ever-- but man could he jump!!! Just don’t leave long and behind him even a fraction,b/c if you do, there’s no pony under you when you hit the ground!!! His barn name was “Cruiser” because his old show name was “Cruise Control”

Paul’s Pizza-- “Red” one of my first show horses. I hated his reg. name so I showed him as Paul’s Pizzaz instead

Valerie Moon–“Val”-- one of the only barrel horses I ever saw who could run a barrel pattern, change bridles, walk into a western pleasure class and WIN!!

Joey- Sloppy Joe.

Great thread!

Smokin’ Badger Bar (Smokie. No, he was not grey. Yes, I was a moron.)
Daydream Believer (Buddy). JC name was Esquina.
Black Eyed Susan (Smudge)
The Dutchman (Oliver)
MA Red Hot Chili Pepper (Georgie)
Wolfe Tone (Patsy)
Fin McCool (Fin)
Time For Nancy (Nancy)
O’Connell Street (Nellie). Her registered name is actually R&R’s Nellie, which is about as exciting as they come. Hence the name change.

Currently;
Wai - his paddock name is Cake, which suits him really…
Waitangi eBay - her paddock is Ellie, its a cute name for her really
Major Classique - that’s Sebastian, I like it…but his racing name was Mr Bear which would suit him a lot more

Over the years I’ve had
Kinetic Diversity (KD) - which suited her, she never stopped moving…
Electric Blue (Blue)
Bay Calypso (Kelly) - he was my dressage pony…so in a way danced I guess? :stuck_out_tongue:
Honey Bee (Honey) - she was the cutest 12hh pony…
Black Chevrolet (Chevy) - she was black…and speedy…
Mickado (Mickey)

My two currently:
Magic - registered JC name “Miss Talbot Road”, and all the "Missy"s I’ve met have been pretty evil, so I went with Magic for the barn name and Must Be Magic for the show name. She’s not so magical sometimes, though.

The new boy is Finn, or Finnegan, or sometimes Piglet. He’s a Belgian/Appendix cross, and he’s got the Belgian coloring. Finnegan means “son of Finn”, and “Finn” means blond, so I figure that works. His previous names were Sir Lancealot (enh) and Buddy (boring). His show name is Tempting Fate.

Previous horses:
Emma, show name of Moonshadow
Java, reg. name of Mints Trick, show name of Playing With Fire

My mare’s show name is Dare to Dream, which is similar, but not her APHA registered name. My friend came up with it, since eventing has been my dream for a long time and it is finally coming true. We joked last year after I got eliminated at my first BN horse trial that we should change it to “Dream On”
