SPIN OFF--- why cages instead of tapedaros?

as i mentioned on the stirrup thread i have the easy rider stirrups with cages. the cages are hideous and i want a smooth surface anyway, so i’m thinking of buying tapedaros to add to my easy riders.

but why did people get away from the old full coverage style and go with cages anyway?

and i should get my leather guy to make them or buy them outright?
thanks for your thoughts.

I’ve used both. Tapaderos are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay hotter. Cooked footies. (Not a winter problem.)

The cages are also lighter, easy to clean mud off of and don’t require any care like leather does.

But the cages catch twigs and branches…they both have pros and cons.

well warmer would be great for winter riding, that’s for sure. now i need to see if i can find some which will fit on my easy rides.

They are bulky when you put the saddle in the trailer and have to deal with already bulky stirrups in your face. My rear tack is already small, big honkin’ taps would be an aggravation. And they will slap you in the shin when you carry the saddle. And yes, darn hot!

I don’t use cages, I use EZ rider-type stirrups with the cushioned foot bed, I don’t want the cages, but I darn sure don’t want Taps. My saddle is heavy enough as it is

lol, that knee banging hurts, doesn’t it?
i’ve taken to removing to removing my stirrups before i take the saddle off the horse, just to protect my poor legs while i have to carry it.

on a western saddle?
I ride too often for that to make sense to me?

nope, i ride the trails usually in my county dressage saddle. luckily it’s easy enough to slide stirrup leathers on and off.
i cannot get the hang of even girthing a western saddle, let alone fussing with the stirrups!

It seems to me that the cages could be a problem when bush-wacking. Way too easy for a branch to get hung up in it. I have a pair of Easy Riders (or similar brand) on my endurance saddle & I really like them. That wider platform for my foot makes a huge difference for me.
