Spinoff from posting FB pics

As a breeder if I see one of the horses I bred achieve a goal: say good scores at a show, inspection, HOY awards, etc I will post that on my FB page and website. I have not asked owners if I could as I figured that information was public knowledge:0

Do you think it is OK to post public information without asking? The reason I ask is sometimes folks don’t get back to you regarding posting information. As a breeder, even a micro-breeder, the way you build your business is through word of mouth and posting of successes of offspring that I bred. I feel like I have the “right” to post public information. Of course if i wanted to put up a picture the owner would have to OK that.

What do you all think?

If it is public knowledge then you should be fine. You can use your own photos (of the horse) … if their photos you would need permission to use the photo. If it is a show photo used by the show management people, ask them if you can use their photo.

I have purchased professional photos of my mare’s offspring from shows and used them on my site. I see no issue.

Just to be respectful to the current owners I’d probably purchase a good quality print instead of use some old or out of date photo… or worse one you don’t have the rights too.

But as for posting what’s public information? I’ve seen owners get twisted about breeders/trainers “promoting” their horses in a way they didn’t consent to, so just be aware that they might be really pissy, but that’s more on them than you, IMO. The times I’ve seen it the owner’s attitude was “how dare” the breeder “mooch” off their success and try to use it to promote their (the breeder’s) program. Generally speaking unless the breeder is being a real cow about it nobody seems to mind.

In terms of information, if it’s public knowledge like test scores or placings I post the information if it’s one that I bred or trained/owned. If I own the picture because I or someone in my family (we have two photogs in the family) took the picture then I will post it but I will send a note and a copy of the pic to the ‘now’ owner letting them know. So far no one has taken offense. In fact, everyone has thanked us for the professional quality picture for free and shared links to our site or page. If I do not own the pic and would like to use it, then I ask for permission first.

I, like you, am a small/micro breeder. I also try to promote my breed. With that in mind, I also will send pictures to the breeder(s) of those I campaign, breed, etc to the breeders of those horses as well. My intent is to share them and if they wish to post them, I have no problem.

Yea, i think it’s OK to put that sort of info on your website. But you probably know the person you sold the horse to and know if it’s better to post “My home bred so and so won THIS with rider XXX” or “My homebred so and so won THIS with Rider XXX, horse is owned by YYY”. You’re a small breeder so you know if there’s something sensitive coming up with a particular owner. Yea it’s rare but it’s good to be respectful.

Anything you can find published online (USEF, USDF, etc) or in a publication and results is public knowledge. That is fine. As usual photo posting from the owner or the photographer would require the proper releases.
