Spinoff: How many mature horses abound with little/no training to ride or even handle?

Fellow New Englander here. A now “trainer” I grew up with is really making her own selling creatures (mostly TB) that she pops over a couple of fences, lets her friends/siblings crawl all over, and then sticks a nice 5-10k price tag on them. Except for the ones she’s sold as companion horses, which sold for 3 and 5k. So many people interested in a horse trained by a BN eventer…

Too many of these unhandled and/or unbroke horses are simply surplus to requirements, as far as the world is concerned. Few people want the responsibility of them.

Heartless to insist that of the husband, imo.

One of the most dangerous times for any horse, any pet, including housepets, is after their owner dies. There are far too many situations where the only thing the heirs want is to have them gone.

(That includes the occasional farms with numbers of horses and heirs that have zero idea how to feed and care for them on a daily basis - and may not even live nearby to do it.)
