Gone up to 5 in the past. Interestingly it is often the 2nd of two full brothers who seems to have the better result in the breeding shed. Wenzel II, Drosselklang II, Cassini II (although one might argue about that), Gardeulan II, Pik Bube II, Adlerfarn II the list goes on…
working on the fourth with one mare , and the fifth with the other, the mares are half sisters…and the sire is our stallion Beste Gold. I have other miscellaneous pre paid stud fees out there with multiple choices of sires, but I am sure this is worth continuing to repeat.
AND I plan to continue going as long as both will produce (maybe with an exception or two in hopes to get daughters I can continue breeding to the same sire from each mare) I am extremely pleased with both mares and all of their offspring since this mating. The first will be hitting the performance arenas soon, so the real test is coming
Interestingly, my neighbour does embryo transfer with his cows all the time and last year he had 10 embryos from the same cow to the same bull
6 of the calves were just lovely, 2 were average and 2 were absolutely awful
He said this is how it goes in general. so if you breed a mare twice to the same stallion you may end up with the 2 awful ones and never know that the same mating could produce something wonderful
Of course we dont get as many embryos from horses as you do with cows, but i thought the comparison was something to think about

I love the recording in cattle too (in general). If you want to know if a bull sires XX or YY or if a dam line is good for ZZ… they keep track of the information so well! And most (perhaps all), the seller pays the transfer of registration for pedigree’d animals… which is nice too imo.
I was the person that was told to only breed a mare twice to the same stallion. Logic behind that was you should know by then if it’s a home run or not.
There is a QH mare named Zippin The Breeze that has been bred to the QH stallion Invitation Only at least 8 times…and that is just the number of registered offspring she has right now. I know of at least 4 or 5 more than have not yet been registered (2011 and 2012 foals). Invitation Only is the only stallion this mare has ever been bred to.
I just had a repeat cross with my TB mare to Roc USA. First colt is 4 this year and will be my hunter. He is exactly what I wanted, so I decided to repeat the cross last year. My mare just had a healthy colt this week and he is bigger boned, lighter bay like mom (4 year old is dark like dad) and lots of presence.
I can’t say yet if the new colt is better then the 4 year old, but they are both really nice hunter types that I am super excited to have!
I did look at other stallions, but I liked the 4 year old so much I just couldn’t justify changing stallions.
It is a crapshoot, because I could have picked another stallion and got a better or worse foal, who knows!
I am really happy with my repeat and can’t wait for the new colt to grow up!
I had a mare who I bred 13 times to my own stallion. None of the foals were identical, but very similar to each other. And literally all 13 were very successful competitors in dressage, as jumpers, and combined driving, and an approved stallion in the mix. All wonderful movers and athletes and great minds. Another mare was bred six times to that stallion and five times to his son. Less uniform foals than the first due to the fact that her parents were different types, but all turned out to be very good horses. If it’s working, why change?
