Spinoff: Hug Blankets

I posted here about a horse with a giant neck for his body size, and several people recommended HUG blankets. I got around to measuring him, and the 78" actually seems to have a big enough neck to fit him. I went online to order one, only to realize I don’t understand the differences between:

Rider’s International HUG: http://www.doversaddlery.com/hug-stable-blanket/p/X1-24323A/

Abrazo HUG: https://www.horseloverz.com/horse-blankets-sheets-coolers/horse-sheets/turnout-sheets/hug-abrazo-turnout-sheet

HUG Prize: https://www.horseloverz.com/horse-blankets-sheets-coolers/horse-blankets/stable-blankets/hug-prize-stable-blanket

I was going to go with the Prize since it has two surcingles on the stable blanket instead of the Rider’s one - but I wonder if the Rider’s is better quality? Anyone know the differences in these lines?

Thanks!!

I have an abrazo hug. It’s 600d which is fine for my mate because she is super easy on her clothes. It fits very true to size. She is very small in the chest, so I have the front as tight as it can go. The only thing that sucks is when its muddy and mud gets all over the clips.

I would definitely give it a try! One of the reasons I chose abrazo is that they aren’t too expensive, so if it doesn’t work out you aren’t out too much.

Also, the abrazo blankets are super stylish and cute

On face value, what I see is that the Rider’s is 40g warmer, and although the exterior isn’t waterproof it is “water repellent”.

We got ours back when there was only one kind. That said, it has held up great for probably a good seven or eight years. I hate using the rear cross straps that go between the hind legs so I would opt for the double cross in the center.

The reason we originally got it was for a horse that loved to tear shoulder gussets by grabbing and pulling. Couldn’t do that with the Hug style. He never got shoulder rubs either and the chiro loved the design because he felt that other styles bear down terribly on the withers when they lie down where this didn’t seem to.

A good friend of mine has used hug blankets forever and recently purchased some new ones. These had elastic straps. The straps stretched so much that the blankets were pulled behind the withers, leaving big “saddle sores”. The horses still have white patches from last winter.

I’ve used the Abrazo and International Rider ones. The Abrazo tends to have a bigger stretcher neck area. So if you have a horse with a thick neck and that is set in low I would recommend that brand. I have one horse on the farm that fits in this brand great. I personally like the International Rider ones better, they seem to fit the majority of horses nicely, even my Haflingers.
