Spinoff: Hunt-ish attire

I tried asking this in the other thread, but posters were too busy eating the OP for lunch.

Would NON-tan/patent boot tops be frowned on/considered disrespectful to a member of a hunt? I’m not talking about good taste/personal taste, just if they’d be put in the same category.

My bootmaker, who outfits at least one hunt, said that funky coloured tops don’t count since they’re non-traditional anyways. Was he incorrect?

These aren’t mine, but you get the idea (warning, link is S-L-O-W):

We’re seeing colours like olive, charcoal, plum, burgundy etc in the jumper ring. I have tops in dark burgundy (looks black from a distance) because I preferred a deliberate slight contrast over mismatched black. I mostly wear them at home or maybe schooling shows, and hunting isn’t a big thing here. I do however travel back east and sometimes ride at a friend’s barn in an area with multiple hunts and would rather not anger the area’s hunt set ;).

Well, that really isn’t a part of hunt attire so I can’t imagine why any hunt person would be offended.
Kind of like the coats that are so popular now with the different color collars. 90% of the folks riding in them just like the pretty colors and have no idea it actually is based on hunt colors. I actually asked a girl wearing one when they first came out what hunt she was with (at a show) and I was excited because I dont see many other hunters at the shows I attend. She said it was just the coat and she didn’t hunt.

Of course, I can’t imagine why anyone would want burgundy tops or some such foolishness on their boots, I’m a bit of a traditionalist, but hey, if that floats your boat, whatever.

I apologize, Ibex - it wasn’t the original poster, it was me they are upset with. I can be abrasive like that.

While weird, no, as long as the colors aren’t something typical of a hunt, I doubt most hunters would be offended. Someone on the H/J forum has a pair of black boots with gold tops and they’re nifty. Heck, most hunters would look at you like you were crazy for wearing something bananas like that, not be offended.

Perfect, thanks!

I’d wondered about those. One of our local BNRs has them, and I’m quite sure he doesn’t go out with the local hunt…

'cause they’re pretty. Actually, it looks MUCH better than height added through a mismatched black. I can’t get non-customs that are tall enough, and buying $60 (for Konigs!) on eBay, and adding the tops was way more affordable. And I swear they’re fairly subtle… even my DQ-traditionalist-white-saddlepads-only trainer likes them.

I dont think the patent tops are supposed to add height, rather they are just to delineate colors, hunt knowlege etc. Mine fit right down over the top of my boot.
I agree they would look stupid if the boot and the top were both smooth leather and didn’t match, but that’s probably why they do them in black patent.
But as far as whatever other color, I don’t think any hunt people would care. As long as you weren’t hunter showing I can’t imagine anyone would have a problem with it.

It just looks silly as opposed to offensive.

Ibex - seriously? You found Konigs in your size (we won’t talk about the price you paid on Ebay, ahem), but they were too short, and you just had those tops added? Genius!

(off to sweet-talk my pet cobbler into adding tops to all my too-short boots  )

Yup! They were a smidge too tight, so he stretched them and added gussets as well. It took a couple of adjustments to get them perfect, but I have, for the first time ever, boots that come up high enough! They’re not as perfect as if they’d come from the factory that way, but for a total of $300 for boots that fit like full customs, I’m ok with it!

Equibrit:  as I said, asking about accidentally annoying hunt folks, not about “if you liked them”.

Ahh - glad you got your question answered Ibex - I was wondering as well. It’s my friend who has the black/gold boots over on the H/J forum, a bit much for me but she gets compliments on them all the time. I think the next pair I have made, I’m getting some colour. (I really want the deep midnight blue boots but I think I might cause heart-failure if I wore them anywhere but Arg!)

I’ve been craving midnight blue dressage boots to go with my blue pikeur show coat. And of course I would get the midnight-blue GR8 to complete the look. Yeah, I’m one of THOSE people

I think we’re long lost sisters! I totally want the boots & the midnight blue helmet they sell as well to wear with my navy hunt coat. I haven’t quite gotten up the courage to buy/try it though

You have to see the boots that Casa Las Botas sells - they’re LOVELY! You can’t actually tell they are blue until you get close up, from far away they look black.

From the subject header, “hunt-ish” attire, I thought that it would be a discussion of black field boots…

I’m on the site but it’s not loading :frowning: … I have to ask, how much does it cost to get boots made in ARG??

Well, that’s where we started at least. Boots in question also started out as all-black field boots.

Field boots with tops??? No way.

Field boots are brown.

The hunter show world has invented black field boots.

Now the eventers are creating field boots with tops? No foxhunter would ever mistake those as something that was poaching on the hunting tradition of top boots to go with colors. Field boots with tops are clearly a fashion statement/costume.

OK… Flame suit and Iron Panties on.

So, what’s the deal with the lovely BROWN Vogels I have stored in the back bedroom!?!? Yes, Vogels, dress boots NOT field boots, and made in lovely soft dark brown leather. Older boots, still beautiful. A tad tight in the leg, darn it.

Considering putting in zippers and dying them black… for the price of a new pair, it could be worthwhile.

Or, is brown acceptable ANYPLACE? In that case, just the zippers, maybe.

Boot Fashion Police, help me!

Quite proper in the hunt field! I know that the guy I ride with (super fashion police, and yes, he’s straight) cringes when he sees ANY field boots out in the hunt field. Brown field is better than black, but he said he would prefer brown dress…

If they’re a ladies size 9 tall, they’re totally inappropriate and you should send them to me immediately :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a pair of brown dress boots

I wear them on cubbing days. I get lots of compliments on them. They are very old Marlborough’s made in England. Don’t know how they came about but by the looks of the box they were 20-30 yrs old when I got them a couple of years ago. They were in the back room of a Tack Store that was closing.

If those brown boots are a size 7 (or even a 7 1/2) you should immediately clean out your closet and send them to me   I mean, I wouldn’t want you to run the risk of incurring the wrath of the fashion police. Really, it would be for the best and I promise to give them a lovely home
