NBCSN/ITV just did a very nice segment on Lester Piggott. He was just photographed by the statue of him just unveiled by the Queen.
Did you ever get to see him ride?
I remember his 1990 Breeders Cup Mile win on Royal Academy. He’d only just returned to riding 10 days prior, having first retired in 1985.
I highly recommend Dick Francis’ biography of Piggott. It’s not exactly objective, as the two men were great friends, but it’s a great read. It was published shortly after Piggott first retired but before he was convicted of tax fraud, for which he spent a year in jail.
