split reins, getting used to them

I had the hardest time getting used to the split rein thing converting from H/J to western. I finally got a great tip from someone to get the weighted end reins… and wow what a difference. The thick heavy rein stays put, while a lightweight one will move around and be harder to control!

I tried for awhile the yacht rope split reins. They were ok for trail but I had a very hard time with them when working cattle.

I do like my reins now… a lot but it was a tough transition!

Light weight reins are a pain! You also need a bit more length as short reins will slip out of your hands easier.

The first pair of decent weighted end reins I got were just a revelation, taught me to buy decent quality, nicely balanced reins.

If you have smaller hands, a good compromise could be 1/8 narrower reins made out of the heavier leather for the right heft.
