Sport Horse Breeding

I’d love to know what everyone looks for when choosing a OTTB for a sport horse career, specifically hunter/jumper. I have a few things I look for and a few things I don’t want to see but I’m no expert. Any advice on picking a TB for a second career? Dos and don’t? I searched but couldn’t find a thread like this. I love reading about bloodlines and want to know as much as I can before picking a new partner for hopefully the hunter ring.

Probably going to have better luck in the Sport Horse Breeding section of the forum. There’s numerous threads there on the subject.

Thanks! As soon as I posted I realized that might be the best place!

there is a mare that I really like that has been recently posted to Finger Lakes listings. Name: Saratoga Fields. Livery Chestnut with chrome. Flat kneed mover, beautiful build with an uphill run. By a Forty Niner son and out of a Summer Squall mare. She isn’t a war horse by any means but lovely mare

Vanessajean, the other place to look is the eventing forum. Do a search and you will get LOTS of info. There are some very well educated posters there who are willing to share their insight.

BTW, I think it was last week on Eventing Nation’s Weekly OTTB wishlist that I saw a mare with super breeding (IMHO) and for short money ($700). By a son of Galileo, out of a Danehill mare. We attended the Longines Champions Weekend in Ireland a few weeks ago, and that breeding was (one side, the other or both) was in the majority of the horses. If I had the space for something to play with and breed she’d be in my barn!

This is a fairly dated article but the links referenced might be of value to you.
