I’m interested in talking to a sports psychologist (preferably one that is familiar with competitive riding). I spoke to someone recently and was flabbergasted by her cost… so I need someone that takes insurance (BCBS). Any recommendations?
Not sure where you are located but Sports Psychologist April Clay does Skype and phone sessions. She was a competitive show jumper for many years. Her website mentions she charges $80 CAD per half hour (approx. $60 US) or $160 CAD per hour (approx. $120 US). Her website is www.bodymindmotion.com
Tonya Johnston possibly? https://www.tonyajohnston.com/ She is also a rider. She also has a great book, Inside Your Ride.
I believe a friend used Jenny Susser before medal finals several years ago and was very happy with the help she provided.
Just want to add that a lot of therapists do not take insurance, especially small or single person practices. Contact your carrier (BCBS) and find out what your coverage is for these appointments. You will need to pay the therapist in full up front- they will provide you with what’s called a superbill and you submit that (and probably a simple form) to your carrier and get a refund. It is simple.
Never let the fact that the provider does not bill insurance deter you from getting the care you need. A little easy legwork on your end is usually all it takes.
An example: I live in a rural area where I have dental insurance coverage, but no in-network providers, so everything is out of pocket and I send the bill to insurance for reimbursement. Also we have few in-network specialists and no in-network therapists, so most of my appts “don’t take insurance” because it’s up to me to handle- once you learn the process, really, really easy.
Margie Sugarman is amazing!!! she does in person or phone appointments… has helped both myself and my daughter through a ton! she rides so she gets it!!!
Jenny Susser. There are plenty of clips of her clinics and lectures online so you can get a feel for her first.
Agreed!
Another Margie vote!!
In my junior days I worked with Tonya Johnston, and she was phenomenal. I cannot fathom getting on a horse or jumping without thinking of some of the things she taught me. Riding for me was very mental, and a lot of pieces had to click together before I could start winning, and the mental aspects were a big part of that.
Unfortunately, they wouldn’t cover the last two times I tried using someone out of network (acupuncture and physiotherapy). I submitted the superbills like you suggested. The acupuncturist even became a preferred provider two days after my last appointment and they still wouldn’t cover it.
