Spring fly allergies and other fun chestnut things

Hi all. My boy normally has pretty good skin, but I think this year is going to be pretty bad for spring grass/fly junk. He’s already getting hives in the evening from bugs, and my special idiot likes to nap in fire ant nests. Like many chestnuts he’s a magnet for them and has weird reactions and skin things from it sometimes.

During the summer, I normally try to cover him as much as possible with the heat. He wears a big rambo fly sheet, mask, and boots normally. He looks like an alien .

This year I need to figure something out for fly boots. He used to wear the Kensington fleece lined ones, and they were great in a small groomed pasture, but they couldn’t stand the mud and activity at the new big and muddy pasture. They were constantly falling around his feet no matter what, and then he just walked on them and destroyed them.

I got these next, hoping they would work better. They stayed up great but rubbed the heck out of his legs and I had to stop putting them on. He was naked the rest of the summer and cracked his feet stomping at flies, even getting a few bruises and an abscess.

This summer, I want to try and figure out boots that won’t fall and won’t rub. I only really need front boots, but all 4 would be nice if the price is reasonable. Any recommendations? Budget is around $50.

Or is there something I can do to help these current ones rub less? I thought about cutting a tube sock to fit over his leg underneath but I didn’t know if that would be too hot. Or maybe a single layer of vet wrap around the spot it rubs?

TIA!

I haven’t used them myself, but have heard good things about the shoofly boots. They look strange but apparently they work well.

Shoo fly boots are great.

Definitely the Shoo Fly leggins. I got a set last year and they work wonderfully on my sensitive-skinned, fly magnet, appaloosa gelding. It’s about time to dig them out again for this year. They’re great!

4th the shoo fly boots

Another vote for the Shoo Fly boots. I had the same issues with the more fitted style of fly boots - they would slide down unless I put them on so tight I was worried about bowing a tendon.

Majyk Equipe also makes a similar boot, although I haven’t tried them: https://majykequipe.com/collections/fly-protection/products/fly-bye-boots

Another vote here for shoo fly boots. My gelding keeps them on through gelding herd antics. He sports the stylish neon pink ones, so the times he has lost one (I can literally count on one hand), they’re super easy to find.
