Spur rub prevention: Waterford, Soft Touch or Rollerball spurs?

I’ve had my somewhat hot jumper for over three years. The first year I didn’t wear spurs or carry a whip, then I used both, but dropped the spurs for jumping. As I have figured her out more, it’s become clear she needs a spur and a whip, even over fences when she “ramps up” and I have been keeping the spur on for almost a year every ride, all ride. I have never had an issue with spur rubs, but in the last two weeks, she has developed rubs on both sides, worse on the side she leans on. They aren’t terrible, just hair rubbed off. No broken skin or swelling, but I feel awful.

I will say, she is pretty floofy this year in her coat, to the point where I clipped her for the first time this summer and am considering clipping her again now. And she has been quite quiet, even lazy, recently. I have a steady and educated leg, but I probably am nagging her a bit.

Aside from asserting myself more and getting her to respect the aids, I am interested in a spur that will minimize rubbing.

Which work best for that and aren’t too harsh for a hot horse? I’ve seen Waterford, Soft Touch and Rollerballs mentioned. Any favorites?

Thanks in advance!

ETA: I almost never use the whip, and maybe that is part of my problem. I mainly keep it in the hand she bulges out towards to keep her straight. I don’t actually hit her with it… although I have started to since the rubs.

I’d go with the roller ball spur. I’ve still seen rubs with soft touch and I feel the roller ball is less prone to rub than the Waterford. Plus my roller balls make a slight jingle-y noise when I walk in them so I feel like John Wayne when I wear them. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Thank you!! Which Roller balls do you like? Am currently in a mediumish blunt one like this:

Definitely don’t want anything that loses a ball or catches a tail as per prior threads.

Leave a hairy patch where the spur hits his body or use a belly band. Spur rubs are common on clipped horses. Even the side of my daughter’s boot used to give her horse a spur rub when he was clipped. Now that he does dressage with me, he no longer has that problem.

The problem is, she isn’t clipped! She’s quite floofy in fact. My trainer doesn’t believe in the bands to protect from rubs for us, as a lack of an educated leg clearly isn’t the problem and that the bands only mask the problem. I have to think that something in the past two weeks with her sudden laziness and sudden heavy coat has converged, since this hasn’t been a problem for us in the years I have had her… and because I ride multiple other horses, lazy and hot, all in spurs and none with rubs. Hoping this is a blip, but also want “better” spurs!

Edited for clarity and typos.

How old is she? Could she have PPID?

  1. And god I hope not, because if you’ve followed all my other threads, I already have been through doozies. But, no, no signs of being Cushoid. And she recently underwent a big weight loss regimen because she was stupidly fat… so vets are on lookout. We’ve gone down two girth sizes!

I believe I have the FES or Horze version. The ball is a bit over a centimeter and the overall spur length is about an inch. The ball rotates completely which I like. I think it would translate well with the size spur you are using. The ball will be slightly bigger so no harsher.

I think tails are much more likely to be caught in the versions where the balls do not spin, like these. I haven’t had an issue with the above ones. They have lasted a long time (which is also why I can’t remember which one exactly they are!)

Since you mentioned quiet and fluffy, my mind immediately wondered…

Totally fair! And thanks for thinking of us that way!

I get induced January 3rd or 4th assuming all goes well, so the forum will have to deal with me a little while longer.

That’s so soon!!!

Gosh, I know! Such a mixture of emotion. Very excited, also scared. Getting all the sleep I can now before this baby comes and I never sleep again. I also can’t wait to ride again when things level out a bit!

That’s ok. We all have different opinions, different backgrounds. I think the important thing is for people to be open minded and be able to coexist peacefully with differing opinions. Diversity is the spice of life.

I use to be much more involved in the equine world. I’ve gotten to step back a bit and I am grateful for it. I think the best horse people are ones that can be humble and listen to other people’s perspectives. They are also the ones humble enough to listen to the horse.

From what I can see you are involved. And smart.

Go with your gut. Don’t let someone get in your head. Things happen and as long as you are doing what you can to rectify it, that’s what really matters.
