Spurs under half chaps? Or half chaps for larger calves?

I have really wide calves, and the best (smooth leather, I don’t prefer suede) chaps I have found are the Perri’s Professional half chaps. However, because they have the flap of leather that covers the zipper on the side, the extra leather and the flap/snap at the bottom interferes with my spurs and causes them to slide up and down (the spur wants to rest right where the snap is but cannot).

  1. Will it look silly to ride with spurs under the chaps (around the boot, then put the chaps on) at a schooling show? Is it even legal to wear them that way?

  2. Any suggestions for reasonably priced (<$125-$150) half chaps that offer calf widths that range from 18"-19"? Available in black smooth leather (full leather or elastic section for stretch is fine). I would prefer not to go custom, but would prefer something that sits higher on the boot (doesn’t have the triangle of leather/bunched elastic that covers the top of the foot) and doesn’t have a flap to cover the zipper. Regular height.

Thanks!

I have half chaps with that extra piece of leather over the snap and I just put my spurs over the top of the leather snap. I just make the leather strap part under my boot longer so it can fit higher on my boot. If I wear the spurs under my half chaps, the spur is too low to be effective.

Have you looked into the Ovation plus size tall boots? For only like $100 more you can have tall boots. I have a pair of the fuller fillies half chaps that are smooth leather (my calves are 20" right now) and they work great but I think they quit selling them.

I have not looked into the Ovation boots, but I will definitely check them out! I’m currently wearing my spurs under my chaps (they fall directly above the spur rest on my boot this way), but when I wear them over the chaps and I put them over the top of the leather snap, the spur moves up and down on my leg. I have tried readjusting the tightness of the straps and the spur itself and nothing seems to keep it in place!

My only hesitation with tall boots is that for some reason I tend to wear out the soles of my boots quickly (usually only lasts me a year before the bottoms are smooth and my feet are sliding on the stirrups) and it’s less expensive to replace short boots than tall boots!

Hmm, I think the spurs I’m using are longer than yours (the bars). I wonder if that has anything to do with why they won’t stay in the correct position?

I have always put my spurs on under my half chaps. It would never occur to me to put them on overtop.

I put my Spurs under the chaps but the back snap rests above the spur. So the business part of the spur isn’t covered. I wear a pretty long spur with roller.
Maybe your chaps are too long for your leg?im a shorty but don’t have wide calves. I wear Ariats and they have stretched a lot.

Pro Chaps are great. Three styles in many size combos allow for excellent fit. It’s a Canadian company, so prices shown will be much less after exchange.

I just use a longer strap.

Ditto. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pair of English spurs that would fit over half chaps. The branches of your spurs must be MUCH wider than mine!

ProChaps with spurs over. If the branches of the spurs aren’t quite wide enough you can bend them just a little by hand.
