Squirrel/dog question

 These are pretty funny!! Incident yesterday, my dogs killed a squirrel and when I went to get them the bigger one was in the process of eating the head (UGH). I posted wondering if I should worry about sickness, but she seems just fine, so I deleted the post. Little dog prefers the hunt, so wasn’t worried about him, though he is probably the killer. The offenders here. squirrelalert (2)

Sometimes they can get worms and parasites from the squirrels but their brains are too small to harbor the rabies virus, so you don’t have to worry about that.

Thanks!

You’re welcome! I foster them a lot and sometimes find the babies after storms so I get bit all the time by the little boogers

Poor squirrel, it made me sad. The smaller dog is part dachsie and part border collie; even at 12 years old, he is FAST and wicked smart. The younger, bigger girl is into energy conservation and she is also a follower, so highly doubtful she was involved at the beginning of this!

Squirrels can get rabies. They are not commonly found to get it, at least in part because they are often killed by the animal who bit them. But yes they can carry the virus.

Ok I’ll have to take your word for it. I was told by an exotic animal vet who treats squirrels for the local wildlife rescue that their brains are too small to harbor the virus but ok

Not sure why OP was deleted? I love squirrels. Sadly so do my dogs  and they get 1 on occasion but have never suffered any ill effects from eating or mauling them…

Thankfully our fence runs just behind the house along the wooded pasture behind us, so the squirrels can run through the woven wire and the dogs can’t. It has saved many a squirrel.

When I first posted asking about possible impact to the dogs, I got no answers, 24 hours passed and the dog was fine, so I deleted. Also later that evening checked w/ a vet friend of mine. THEN I saw the photos, lol.

Bats carry the virus extremely well and their brains are significantly smaller than a squirrel’s brain

Is it rare and are they unlikely to be a reservoir or transmit it to people? Absolutely. But they are not immune to it or non susceptible.
