Stability Leathers- assuming a no no for Eq?

Hi, all-

I’m just getting back into showing after a several year hiatus with the kiddos and am looking to get a new set of leathers for my saddle (Tad Coffin, standard Havana). My current leathers are super bulky under my leg and am looking to upgrade. My first inclination is to get some calfskin leathers as I’ll only be doing hunters and eq these days but I keep reading about stability leathers and how they reduce bulk under the leg. My question is, are they considered acceptable in todays adult eq ring? My gut would say no, given that they are not classic, but I figured I’d ask the experts first :grinning:.

Do you have a picture? Or link?

The USEF equitation rules only mention the stirrups, not the leathers.

EQ 106.6. When showing in the Hunter/Jumping Seat Equitation section it is recommended that riders use traditional
stainless steel stirrup irons that promote proper position of the foot in the iron as well as a correct leg position. It is further recommended that riders use stirrup irons that allow judges a clear and unobstructed view of the position of the foot in the stirrup. Judges may not eliminate a rider for using a particular style of stirrup iron. (Exception: see EQ101.4)

Sure! There are several different brands on thr market these days but most have a similar look to the below:

Thanks!

There is no rule against them. They don’t exactly look conventional, but I doubt they would bother too many judges. Especially for adult equitation.

These are pretty invisible under the leg, as well. I wouldn’t be worried about them being an issue.

I guarantee you no judge will 1) see them, or 2) care.

Thanks, all!

This judge would see them! I think they are awful. That said, it would have zero impact on your score

I had a pair and loved them.

I tried them once and absolutely hated them. 31 flavors and all that

I’ve ridden in clients’ and think they make no difference one way or the other. Just so you have the full gamut of opinions.

I have a pair on my jump saddle, and I agree with you. Can’t feel an appreciable difference.

I just show hunters, but I like the stability leathers. I pair them with Flexon irons, the black safeon ones with the super traction angled pad. I have a pair of the Total Saddle Fit stability leathers and also had some wide Free Jump ones at one point (don’t recommend, not durable). I guess it depends on your region, but in mine if the adult eq fills and you can find 8 jumps and not look like you’re pulling on the reins, you’ll be aces in whatever leathers you choose! Edite to add a pic of the leathers/stirrup combo from the side.
