Looking for fly trap that I can hang just outside of my stall (at boarding barn) Don’t want to use those ugly fly tapes. Any suggestions that might work?
Thanks
Do fly sticks fit into your ugly category as well?
If you go with one of the bag type traps, make sure to replace it often. Older ones can get quite ripe smelling and your fellow boarders may not appreciate the rotten odor in the barn space.
Do they attract other things like pollinators and beetles?
I have tried many brands and the clear winner is “Rescue! Outdoor Disposable Hanging Fly Trap” on Amazon. I hang these around the perimeter of the barn/near the paddocks and replace them weekly.
Whatever type of sticky tape you use, please be sure birds can’t get trapped in it. That’s a new kind of horror.
This!
This too.
I don’t think those stinky traps will attract and capture biting flies. So you need another type if those flies are your problem. And if you use a stinky trap - I have read that they are the most effective at ground level. So make sure a horse or another animal can’t knock it over because …PHEW!
Please do not use any of the baited traps inside the barn.
- they smell like rotting carcass
- you’re actually attracting flies to them, potentially making the problem worse
- they smell like rotting carcass
They are best served outside! I’d be looking at sticky-type traps.
I’ve used this

And this

As “nice” looking sticky traps.
They obviously need to be placed where horses or other animals can’t reach them.
Agree 1000x on keeping the stinky traps away from the barn. The entire point is to attract flies with that rotting carcass smell. No one wants that nearby.
Agree to not put the stinky fly traps outside your stall! But, they catch flies better than anything I’ve tried. I’ve tried sticky fly tape but it leaves horrible residue if it touches anything and not sure I’d want it outside my horse’s stall either. the stinky ones are cheap and disposable–if you put them outside the barn, they might do a good job for everyone there. We’ve had a horrible fly season to start with and I have 3 of them outside and I’ve noticed a big drop off inside the barn. But I spray too so that might partially explain it.
What, if anything, does your boarding barn already do for fly control? And other things for horse comfort, like stall fans?
If nothing or very little, a baited fly trap outside just one stall might tend to attract more flies to that one area and make things worse for that stall occupant.
I’ve used both of the sticky traps Simkie listed. The yellow one has not been effective for me, unfortunately. I found some bird tail feathers in the shimmery trap one morning, so haven’t tried that again. YMMV.
I have not tried this product, but saw it at Tractor Supply this weekend and thought of this thread.
Sticky fly trap with plastic guards so birds hopefully do not get caught in it.
Thanks all !
You can also get them on amazon! thanks for the suggestion - we have baby birds now in our barn along with the flies
As an update for some reason can’t get these for California :frowning - don’t know why but Amazon says can’t ship here for these.
I love the yellow and red quickstrike ones. The flies land on them and boom dead.
