Stall Accent Lighting - Getting that night time "warm yellow glow" look

Looking for lighting over the stalls in the barn that throws off a soft vibe and a beautiful warm color …inviting and soothing. Vapor tight is a requirement right? The ONLY lights I can find that seem close to what I’m thinking are Architectural Lightings shaded jelly jars at $157 each and I need 5 lights. My barn has already gone terribly over budget and I don’t have that kind of money for decor.

Do you all know of any other ideas?

P.S. I’m already doing the T5 and T8 LED’s from Pro Lighting and they are BRIGHT and useful but I hate bright blue light unless it’s needed. There’s plenty of times you just don’t need bright light and I think the horses are like me and like soft, natural light whenever possible.

Oh my is that BEAUTIFUL! What a great idea. That is EXACTLY the mood and ambiance I’m thinking. Is that your barn?

That is beautiful!

I have serious barn envy here. Just beautiful.

Perfect topic!

So for those of us who need to put economic rationality in the equation, I have these questions:

  1. Can you simply choose the warmer-colored light from LEDs and have that technology do that job? But it seems odd to me if that’s the case more barns aren’t lit this way. Are those bulbs more expensive than the bluer ones that look like florescent light?

  2. How about going the cheap route but having lots of light? Here, I’m thinking of using incandescent flood lights for inside the stalls and jelly jar lights on the posts along the fronts.

I’d prefer to have a switch for each stall’s flood light so that you didn’t have to light up the whole row of stalls in order to have the light on in one. But 90% of the time, I think you’d just use the whole row of jelly jar lights on the stall fronts to do the job.

I do think there should be one place in the barn that is really well lit for emergencies like stitching up a horse at night, so maybe the wash rack is that area. Do you guys think the aisle of a center aisle barn will be too dim with just the jelly jar lights on both sides?

Yes, that is a really beautiful barn lighting.
RE jelly jars. I appreciate the sentiment and old times look. I find them useless. They don’t provide illumination and looking directly at the filament, they’re ugly.
Big strong LED with dimmable switch to give you operating room lighting standards, for cleaning inspecting emergency surgery etc. LEDS per The poster for all else.
All that said, I have no idea what the standards are for livestock. I’d run it by your Ag extension. I have a vague idea that lighting/heat lamps has to be shatterproof or contained.

Since LEDS use so little energy I’d look into setting up a switch so they can run on battery during power outages.

Another factor is whether the lighting is rated for wet environments or dry only.

I love the warm light look as well. For the record, I put bright white lights around the perimeter of my wash rack - no shadows - that is great for grooming, clipping, veterinary issues, etc. But the rest of the barn (aisle, stalls, overhead in the wash rack) I did the warm light and love it.

That is very interesting information.

We have bright lights in our barn and glad for them.
Easier to notice the rare rattler just napping somewhere in there.
Would not want to have any less light to see by.

I am obsessed with warm white bulbs - i do not like harsh lighting in the barn for evenings and am a little nuts about warm lighting outside as well. Overhead bright lights are fine for cleaning / farrier / driveway access whatever, but for normal feeding and care, I also ran a few lines of string lights in our barn above the rafters / between stalls. They make evenings a little magic and cozy - i got these (CDN link) https://www.costco.ca/feit-led-string-lights-14.63-m-(48-ft.).product.100400023.html

It is a more rustic look, but my hubs built me a cowboy barn (for my DQ ponies) so it works.

Your barn is incredible. Is there lighting up in your cupola or is that from the cove lighting? What other gem ideas have you got? Could you share other pictures?

Good questions. Thanks to Chall I’ve just now learned what it appears I want is 2700k for the warmer light. My wash still will be brightly lit with a light on each side and at 4000k so will have very bright light for emergencies and all the times you want BRIGHT light.

Good to know you find jelly jars pretty useless and I didn’t know LEDs could be dimmable.

Good to know! I love that warm glow coming from your barn.

Yeah, I don’t have ANY dangerous critters. Can see why you’d want bright lights!

I LOVE this idea too. Do you know I had this crazy idea to do lighting like this in my indoor? Light it up like you see barn wedding venues instead of that bright fake lighting that turns me off. What do you think of that idea? Is it crazy to do subtle lighting in an indoor? I grew up flying through the woods at night - galloping under the moonlight. Horses don’t care if you aren’t worried. I think of Cavalia and other shows and they aren’t riding in bright light.

Could you share a picture of your barn lit up at night - for inspiration!

Some LEDs are dimmable. (No idea if “strong” ones can.) For jelly jars–I was surprised to find a lot of LEDs are not suitable for enclosed fixtures.

From the OP–I have open fluorescent fixtures in my barn and arena, 14’ up. (not vapor tight) Wash rack has enclosed fixtures.

good GLORY that barn is amazingly gorgeous. I can’t get over the CEILING in it. so funny when I was looking for lighting for the widdle ghetto barn, I wanted as harsh and bright as possible…and did a lot of reading on how to place/angle them for less shadows for seeing legs/etc. And here are these living room mood quality dim lights in barns! So lovely!!! Needs a fireplace and a couple of wing chairs at one end.

Good to know. My rafters are also 14’ up and I’ve got LOTS of ventilation so do I really need vapor tight? Thinking not. Just 5 stalls.
