Stall Fans

Hey experienced barn owners - we’ve moved our little herd from MN to NC this past fall. In our new barn we’re looking at putting in fans (one in each stall and 3 under the 48’ outside overhang. The fans we’re looking at are 20" industrial fans enclosed/rated for wet conditions) and blow 4,750 cfm (only one speed option) sound output is 78 decibels…overkill or a good choice??

I was surprised to see 78 decibels… you might be interested in this chart from Purdue

I do not have experience to share, just an observation on the noise output ~

i use these dura fans 18" non oscillating. i don’t find them particularly noisy, but i can’t find decibel info

I just got 3 18” sealed motor fans from Valley Vet (yeah free shipping) and installed them last weekend. They didn’t have a decibel rating but they are very quiet.

78 Db each is pretty noisy. Dishwashers - the quiet ones - are around 50-60 Db…

here in Ocala I have 18 inch fans and they are plenty big enough. One in each stall, wash rack, and tacking cross ties…

I am surprised at the only one speed option, most or nearly all fans used by farms are at least two speed with three being the most common

What brand? I am replacing box fans and my head is spinning looking at all of the options. Would like at around 4000 CFM and as quiet as possible. Thanks!

If you can swing it, go with industrial ceiling fans. The ones I use are CanArm from Farmtek. They are silent, and move the air gently throughout the entire stall, not just in one small area. I like them much better, and fewer flies are a bonus!

Thank you. I don’t have enough ceiling height with the way my trusses are to put ceiling fans. They look great!

This is what I use as well. I’ve had mine for going on 8 years. It does a great job.

It’s louder than your common or garden variety box fan but moves a lot more air. I’m in Baltimore, where the heat index gets up to 115 in the summer. I sometimes find that the barn staff find an excuse to check something in my horse’s stall so that they can stand under it too.

I think they are Bannon, from Northern Tool. I see now they only have 20 inch - maybe that’s what I have? Been up for a while. THey are floor fans but you can hang them from the “stand”.
