Stall kick padding?

Looking for some help in lining at least one wall of my horse’s stall due to him kicking the wall.

Horse is young and active - okay mischievous - okay, maybe a PITA. He has all day turnout most days (except extreme weather) but he is active in his stall, He gets plenty of hay (often a bit left in the morning). He found his corner feeder a great toy and tore it down, so now he eats on the matted floor. Of course he ignores a Jolly Ball and other attempts to provide toys. (Well he did pull his blanket off the blanket rack into the stall and peed on it…)

Recently he has been kicking the wall between him and his one neighbor (end stall). The neighbor is his over-the-fence buddy in turnout. BO has moved the neighbor so the stall is empty right now. I am trying a Likit style stall toy. BO and I were discussing how to protect horse and wall in the event that the stall fills.

One boarder has cushions hung on the stall wall that I believe are commercial “kick pads”. Aside from the cost, both BO and I are concerned that my horse would chew on them. So we are thinking of using rubber mats. Has anybody done this? How did you attach them to the wall? Any other ideas?

We used stall mats and attached them with screws/washers.

Better if you attach a 2" x 4" to the wall and hang the mat from it.

This way there is an air space between the mat and stall wall.
That keeps the blow from being as damaging to the wall and horse’s leg.

He may still want to chew on the top where the board is or on the side edges of the hanging mat.
You may protect the top with metal.
For the edges, other than No-Chew or such, you are on your own.
