Stallion for standardbred mare?

A friend of mine has a lovely standardbred mare who trots, not paces and has a nice, rolling canter. She is constantly mistaken for a warmblood and has a superb temperament. She’s 15.3, a dark bay with a round, substantial build.
This is hypothetical at this point as my friend doesn’t know if she will breed her or not, but asked what might make a good cross with her if she did so in future.
Opinions? Anyone else have SB breeding adventures to share?

I have nothing helpful to contribute at all, since my stb is a gelding, but I adore him and I love love love the breed, and I wish I got him as a weanling/yearling, and I’m not gonna lie- this could be totally silly but if I ever found a STB/WB cross for sale in my neck of the woods, I’d snatch it up in a heartbeat.

I live in a “Standardbred sparse” area, and at EVERY show we go to we get asked what breed he is. Everyone thinks he’s a WB.

I have a client who’s bred her big framed trotting Standardbred mare to Waldaire with 2 nice foals to show for it. Pure gaits, plenty of push from behind and a nice free shoulder for both the colt and filly. Both were First Premiums at their respective foal inspections and improvements over the dam…but with the super steady-eddy, bomb proof temperament coming from the standardbred, it is a very nice cross IMHO, especially for amateurs.

I have a breeder that bred her Standardbred mare to Nevada. The resulting foal won the AWS class at Dressage at Devon as a 2 year old. As a 5 year old, he has been purchased as a Grand Prix prospect, and is in training with an FEI rider. She said he was a very talented horse with fabulous gaits.

The Amish are crossing a lot of their Standardbred mares to Dutch Harness Horse stallions and getting some beautiful horses. I would suspect a Standardbred mare would also cross well with a Gelderlander stallion or a Dutch Warmblood stallion with a lot of Gelders blood, too.

I have a client who bred her mare to my Section A stallion. Mare is by the Hanoverian, Graf Gotthard, out of a Standardbred mare. I’ve seen some success using jumper-type stallions with trotting mares. Make absolutly certain that the stallion has an excellent canter though.

We’ll see in June 2010 what the foal turns out like. My stallion has an excellent canter, and has so far very much improved canters on his foals. It will be interesting, as he’s never been bred to that type of mare.

I rode a Gelderlander/Standardbred as a kid. Fabulous horse.

I have a friend who bred a few standardbreds to a lipizzan stallion. All of those foals were gorgeous, excellent movers, and had great personalities.

I owned a Trakehner/Standardbred mare once. She had an awesome trot and a great temperament. She was by the stallion Pregelstrand.
