Stallion for Thoroughbred Mare

If height is a deal-breaker, you might want to think twice about breeding a mare that you consider ‘small’. You can buy a larger young horse with all the abilities you seek for less money and less risk.

JER. Height is not a deal-breaker for me, but I do appreciate your input.

Thank you for all the wonderful compliments. Concerto Grosso and I appreciate it
! He now has a son, Counterpoint, in CA who just packed his amateur/owner around her 1st CIC **. He has numerous TB cross babies that are just now starting to make a name for themselves in the event world. He was underused when he was younger as his barn mate was, Cicera’s Icewater, so there are not a lot of older offspring out there. I have 4 Icewaters who are lovely, but are more pro-rides than the CG’s tend to be. Concerto traditionally improves the temperament of the mares.

Groro. Thank you for your response. Concerto Grosso is my top choice as of now. I have looked at many different stallions and keep coming back to him. I love his way of going and he is such a handsome guy. I have heard great things about his offspring and am pleased to hear that he tends to have amateur-friendly foals.

The other stallions I have considered are E.H. Buddenbrock (though his stud fee is a little higher than desired), Inamorato (a Buddenbrock son), Roc USA, and Navarone.

I hope for the foal to be comfortable with prelim/intermediate.

Wanted to add, totally agree about CG and temperaments. My colt’s dam is a sweetheart, but she can be a bit sensitive. Baby, however, has no spook, and has been just the easiest guy in the world to deal with. Learns everything the first time too, he’s extremely smart. Head over heels for him!

I am currently searching for the right stallion for my Thoroughbred mare. The resulting foal will be my next eventing horse. My mare is very well balanced and has lovely gaits. She is small (only 15.3) and I hope for a slightly larger foal. I want quality movement, height, jump, and temperament. Who doesn’t? Just looking for some input into what stallions you would recommend for her.

So far I am considering Concerto Grosso. I have looked at Sagnol and Rubinus. I feel that Concerto will give me a very well-rounded and even tempered mount.

Lissaro Van De Helle.

For the same reasons I stated in the other person’s thread. He does it all and he produces multi-talent horses. He also has produced offspring sold specifically to eventing homes in the UK and they’re doing very, very well. He also crosses particularly well with TB mares. His youngest are under saddle - super temperament, rideability, and athletic with a Capital A.

Valentino Z! I have some great babies out of my TB mares by him. Great temperaments and amazing athletic ability.

I’ve always like CG. He is unfortunately not right for my TALL mares but if I had a smaller mare, he would be on the list.

Do you want fresh semen or willing to do frozen? If you are open to frozen…that opens a lot of choices.

What type of ride do you like?

Looking at the mare…she is a nice type. I’d want something that maybe adds a bit of length of leg and a slightly higher neck set.

I’m taking a chance on a young stallion this year with one of my proven broodmares (http://www.pedigreequery.com/charm18) – and breeding her to Future Gravitas.

I have a gelding out of this mare by his sire (Grafenstolz) who I love. My mare is tall though (16.3h) and her Graf foal looks like he will be her hight or taller (already over 16.1 and not even 2 yet).

I think this stallion is a really nice type and with his dam side–a very interesting event horse pedigree especially crossed on TBs. And given how Grafenstolz really stamps his offspring, I’m interested to see what this boy passes. You can order doses throug EMCO Stallion Services.

Really there are a lot of nice stallions out there should cross well with your mare.

I crossed my TB mare with Ariadus and got a very athletic offspring that has jumping ability and very nice movement. Excellent temperament as the mare was a firecracker. She was 16.1-ish and I believe the foal matured at 17.2. Can’t say enough about the nice temperament that ariadus seems to pass on. My mare was compact in build and uphill.

Flexible

Gatsby crosses very, very well with TB mares, and adds height, as well as adding bone if the mare is fine, but won’t heavy up an already bone-y mare. The resulting foal would be about 85% TB, and not dull in the slightest.

My stallion crosses very well with TB mares. He is a 16.3H (and throws some size), Holsteiner. He is very brave and did very well in the YEH classes. I switched to dressage and he is now competing at 4th level. He is an amazing jumper and could have gone very far in eventing.
One of his fillies screams 4 star prospect, and all of his babies have the best temperament. He is the total package good looks, very athletic and a temperament to die for. His dad competed at Advanced level in eventing.
