Stallion for Thoroughbred Mare

I am currently searching for the right stallion for my Thoroughbred mare. The resulting foal will be my next eventing horse. My mare is very well balanced and has lovely gaits. She is small (only 15.3) and I hope for a slightly larger foal. I want quality movement, height, jump, and temperament. Who doesn’t? Just looking for some input into what stallions you would recommend for her.

So far I am considering Concerto Grosso. I have looked at Sagnol and Rubinus. I feel that Concerto will give me a very well-rounded and even tempered mount.

Roc USA hands down

I have a small tb mare and have 2 Roc USA colts.

They jump great, are very brave and move well enough that they can excel in the dressage portions of eventing.

My oldest is 6 and he is the bravest and smartest horse I have ever sat on. He will be my derby horse, but many people have told me he would be an amazing eventer.

I have hundreds of pictures if you want to send me your email.

Bloodlines? The right cross for an eventer may well have lots of TB, too…

Concerto Grosso might be an excellent choice. He is Holsteiner on top and TB on his dam line. I do favor Holsteiner TB crosses.

I love Legaczy for a TB mare and he will definitely improve on the mare’s size!

Thank you all for your excellent suggestions  I am taking a closer look at all mentioned. I feel like I am really having trouble narrowing it down to one - there are so many choices!

My mare’s bloodlines can be found here - Pedigree

Something different… You may want to look at Buddenbrock…

An example for offspring…

Take a look at Hunter in California. He’s by Heraldik out of a Holsteiner mare and is registered and MAY BE approved Holsteiner. A couple of his get seem to have been doing quite well in eventing. Standing for Wendy Webster (W2 Holsteiners)

Available fresh cooled this year.

We know she doesn’t have the height you want, does she have the jump, gaits, and temperament? Rule number one, you have to be head over heels with the possibility of a carbon copy of the mare.

I am absolutely head over heels with the idea of a carbon copy of the mare. She is sensible and has three lovely gaits. I would be perfectly satisfied with a foal just like her - but if all goes well… I would be pleased to see a little more size and jump.

Just looked at your pictures, and I LOVE your mare. Especially her rear end in the second picture. She is a beautiful example of what to me is a turf type TB without the straight legs that are so common in modern dirt horses.

Definitely worth breeding to my eye.

What’s her pedigree?

That’s a wonderful old style pedigree. Only thing modern in it is the Wild Again line.
If the second picture is an accurate one, she is quite lovely and well worth breeding.

I had a Concerto Grosso colt out of my mare last year. Lovely mover (CG really stamps), the easiest temperament, very correct. I was looking to add a little height (mom is 15.3 and petite) and definitely bone… Got everything I was looking for and Rosemarie was wonderful to deal with. I would breed to him over and over again.

I recommend Ironman (http:www.ironmanonline.com) he is a proven eventing, and hunter/jumper producing stallion. I have breed two TB mares to him who are about 15.3. My 3 year old is 16.1 the yearling is a big girl too, and should get that same height. I am repeating the breeding again this year, this is a fabulous cross! So I will have three Ironman offspring in my barn.

You are looking for: quality movement, height, jump, and temperament. Ironman produces super movement, with natural balance, Ironman is 17 hands and produces height. The Jump is very much proven in his offspring, many have evented, done jumpers successfully and are successful in the hunter ring as well. Temperment? They are incredibly smart, and are people oriented, they love to please!

Jumper: http://www.ironmanonline.com/images/396_Illya_tw.jpg

Ironman is the total package, he improves the TB mare with bone, brains and substance, and keeps the look and quality of the TB mare. Plus Ironman’s owner, Nancy is fabulous to work with and LOVES to hear about her Iron “kids.”

Ironman is a proven sire whose offspring are also proven.

I always like to hear a mare owner say she would be happy with a carbon copy of her mare - that is such a good starting point!
She looks like a nice mare, and has an interesting pedigree, I agree.
Let me think…

What level eventer are you aiming for?

Navarone goes really well with TB mares. Super character, love to work and can jump the moon. He jumped 1.4 and did Grand Prix Dressage. His son Thunder III competes in the CCI***. We also had a nice son of his that did well in the young eventers.

Kathy

Does Thunder III have another name?

Thank you for all the wonderful compliments. Concerto Grosso and I appreciate it
! He now has a son, Counterpoint, in CA who just packed his amateur/owner around her 1st CIC **. He has numerous TB cross babies that are just now starting to make a name for themselves in the event world. He was underused when he was younger as his barn mate was, Cicera’s Icewater, so there are not a lot of older offspring out there. I have 4 Icewaters who are lovely, but are more pro-rides than the CG’s tend to be. Concerto traditionally improves the temperament of the mares.

15.3hh isn’t what I’d call small.

However, the size of the mare does affect the size of the foal. For example, you can get up to a 10% increase in size if you do ET into a larger mare. Or a 10% decrease if you ET into a pony.

If height is a deal-breaker, you might want to think twice about breeding a mare that you consider ‘small’. You can buy a larger young horse with all the abilities you seek for less money and less risk.
