Stallion owners beware! SHOTS!!!

In the case of a horse what does the quarantine include? Is the horse not allowed to every leave its stall/paddock or is it simply not allowed to come in contact with other horses? Is there any limit to human contact?

(Just curious how this works.)

In the east, we can’t get into shows/events/clinics/hospitals without proof of rabies vaccination. There is a place right on our coggins form for the brand and serial number of the vaccination. I didn’t realize that was any different in other parts of the country.[/QUOTE]

That must be in the Northeast because I have not had to do that for my shows in PA, MD, VA. But I do vaccinate, although my vet does dispense the shots to me. But even in cases where she gives the shot, I do not receive a certificate. I never received one in VA and NC when I lived there.

I’ve never been to a show that required proof of rabies vaccination either, and I’m smack dab in the middle of Rabies country.

I never get a cert either. However, it IS on record with the vet - date, batch number, etc.

All of the endurance type events that I’ve attended in NJ have required rabies certificates, but I’ve never been asked for one in MD, PA, DE or VA

Interesting. Because when you think about it, requiring a rabies certificate for travel in the Mid-Atlantic (rabies central) makes more sense to me than a Coggins test.

Interesting, because I have shown at the Horse Park of NJ in hand USDF and never been asked to have a rabies certificate.

Doesn’t it?

Asking for a Coggins recent in 6 months, but not for proof of Rabies vaccination, makes as much sense as barns requiring horses to be vaccinated for WNV but not Rabies

I guess I am shocked reading all these posts by people who aren’t required to vaccinate because I live in RI, and it is state law here to vaccinate your animals. My dog and my horse are both vaccinated and honestly, I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t vaccinate. My dog’s rabies vaccine is good for three years and my horse’s vaccine is only good for one year but costs me less than $25.

If I take my horse anywhere, I am always required to bring proof of coggins and rabies.

I wonder if it is because we are camping out in places like the Pine Barrens in NJ? The NJTRA (New Jersey Trail Ride Association) even requires a rabies cert for your dog if you bring it with you.

We have a horse from CA who boards with us and when he arrived I inquired why there was no rabies vaccination on his records and was told no one gives them in CA!

That is so NOT true! That person is a liar, liar pants on fire. While it is an optional vaccine, many horse owners in my area do get it. As others have posted, an ounce of prevention…!

I live in the SF Bay Area of California and have had no trouble getting my horses vaccinated for rabies. Pioneer Equine Hospital, a highly regarded clinic in this area, clearly recommends it, here: http://www.pioneerequine.com/pdf/peh_vaccination_protocol.pdf

What a bummer. Next time, do your own handling and ‘trotting up’ instead of letting someone who does not know your animal do it. I apologize, I know this seems like it was not really pertinent, but the thought behind it was, assuming there was or is a good reason not to vaccinate, if owner had done the handling this whole thing would be a non-issue. Unfortunately, the rabies vaccine itself is not without risk. I know of dogs who have suffered hindquarters paralysis immediately after a rabies vacc, and one of the dogs I know about was one of mine. The best thing to do is let your local attending Vet assess the relative risks of vaccinating or not.
My mare did receive a rabies vaccination almost 2 years ago, and I had assumed that since dogs can maintain immunity for 3 years (many States or municipalities only require an every 3 year re-vaccination), that it was the same for horses. So, if this was meant to be a PSA in addition to a vent, it is a good topic for all of us to think about.

Not knowing is not the same as lying. As apparent in this thread, there are several posters who have NEVER heard of vaccinating for rabies in Ca, or many others states on the WC.

CT was rabies free for decades (as was all of southern NE) & there was still state law about rabies vaccinations for dogs, at least. Don’t know about cats, etc. It showed up in the early 1990s.

My mother had rabies vaccine in vet school, 1969 & from the way she was talking that sounded like the only time. She says her titer is sky high.

The person said: “no one gives them in California”. No one? Every vet around here offers it as an option. Not knowing and saying no one does it are not the same thing.

So far this year there have been 67 animals found with rabies in CA. No vet is going to ignore that.

I’m just saying - that’s a very common phrase based on what you experience in your personal circle. Very, very common to say “but no one says/does that around here” and not be lying based on what you think to be true. I just thought it rude to outright call someone a liar based on that.

Yikes!! Sorry to hear that has happened to your boy. I make sure I include the Rabies shot in my minimum yearly shots (for all my horses). It is not up for negotiation, I don’t want to chance anything especially if is can be prevented!

I have one horse who is SO allergic to vaccinations including Rabies. I hate not having them vaccinated, but UofG said if the horse was to get a shot again it would end fatally. I believe it is law here for cats and dogs to get the shot, not sure about horses?

My vet said nothing about rabies and when I requested the vaccine, he seemed a little bemused, but I insisted. Then, when my new horses arrived, he did not have a rabies vaccine with him so I had to wait until the next visit for their rabies vaccines. He said it is really rare (to vaccinate horses) and he has never seen a case of equine rabies. So my point is that maybe your vet offers it, but in my case, it was not offered, and I guess you could say my experience was the same as the person who thought “no one gives them in California.” As to whether “every vet around here offers them” or does not offer them, I wouldn’t know since I have only had experience with two vets, neither of whom offered the shots.

I am wondering if any of the 67 animals with rabies were horses? If not, that could bolster the reasoning of the vets who don’t promote the vaccine. Personally, I don’t want to take the chance however remote it may be.

He is being quarantined at home in his own stall and paddock. So I get to see him whenever I want! He bellows for me every time I open the front door. He wants to know why he’s not being trained and going places!

I was told that the tech was up to date on her rabies vaccines. The quarantine is only in effect to comply with CA law because of the declaration by the Secty. of Health that the entire state is endemic for rabies. Actually, most of the rabies is found in S. CA not N. CA so most rabies cases are over 300 miles away. The head of the hospital told me that he knew my horse doesn’t have rabies but that they have to comply with the law.
