Stallion recommendations?

Looking for stallion recommendations for my mare! Hoping to produce more of a hunter type with hopes of improving jump technique, lengthening neck, and quieter.

She is a just 16HH Reg. Hanoverian / Canadian sport horse from W lines. She’s more dressage bred but was used in the jumper ring. She is a well boned mare with a very pretty face and expressive movement. She doesn’t have a flat knee hunter trot and also has a more uphill canter. Lovely mare with a huge heart. VERY people pleasing which can make her a little sensitive. She is on the more hot side of temperament over fences but a kitten to flat. Has lots of scope but isn’t very tidy over fences.

Looking for something to compliment her but improve on some qualities over fences, improving movement definitely a bonus but she isn’t a poor mover by any means. Just not definitely not a “hunter back” winner. And finally something to pass on a quieter mind.

any feedback is welcomed! I’ve looked and considered stallions such as: Aprio, Carbardino, Amazing… and many more but have started to get overwhelmed and decided to look for input and peoples experience!

If she a heavier or old fashioned W line, they tend to pair really well with R lined horse; WxR is a proven nick - so is WxD, but that is more for dressage.

Rosenthal or Quaterback would be my first guesses without seeing the mare. Sir Donnerhall would be another, very good sire for huntery movement. All three of these stallions improve rideability and temperament, in my experience.

These aren’t really “nicks” – these were just hugely popular crossings back in the day when it was simply “fashionable” breeding to cross the big three (W-R-D) dressage lines and later the Sandro Hit. This is more a testament to the sensationalism/fanaticism surrounding certain stallions at the time than the magic of a nick. A “proven nick” was Donnerhall crossed on Pik Bube mares – this was special. Some might say that Laurie’s Crusader and sons “nicked” with Weltmeyer daughters and Bolero “nicked” with G-line mares.

I would look at some of the C line Holsteiner mares. Coromino is all Holsteiner bloodlines, but approved GOV and Hanoverian I believe. I bred one of his and have known several others that were very consistent as far as scope, size, fabulous temperment, super gaits. He is older and not all that popular, but would probably work well with what you described. Good luck!

Good point and quite fair. Perhaps I should have said cross since it is more generalist.

I see many heavier W lined mares with the ‘W temperament’ suggested to be put up against R stallions, so that’s where my input came from. Who would you suggest or pick?

I’m not sure Quaterback can imporove jumping ability. Am I wrong?

He’s marketed as a dressage stallion but he’s got more jumping in his genes than you’d think.

I wouldn’t use him for jumpers to improve a no-scope mare, but he’s more than established himself as a solid hunter/jumper sire as of late.

I’ve been doing lots of research and having been looking at several different studs. Looking into the R line Rosenthal is deceased and has no frozen available. What are your thoughts on some of the other R studs? I like Rotspon but my mare isn’t huge my any means. She is passported 16HH but I would think they got her on her tip toes and she’s closer to 15.3. She’s medium boned with correct legs.
Or what about Rubignon or Rubius? Anyone with experience or insight?

My mare has Walt Disney, World Cup I, Woermann on her sire side of things. As I said before, I’m looking to improve on temperament (she is a sweetheart and so fun to ride) but is sensitive and can get hot. Looking to improve/add movement is a big one, she has great scope but not the tidiest technique over fences unless they are of decent height. So if that improved too I would be ecstatic. Honestly, If I got a carbon copy of her with a more level brain I wouldn’t complain at all. But if I can improve other areas I will try!

To me Quaterback is a typical result of multi talented genes brought together and multiplied in a great gene pool

Some may think these bloodlines are out of fashion but personally I prefer these kinds of stallions than the insane amount of mass produced “modern” stallions (who in many cases get easy approvals for breeding via i.e. studbooks like A.E.S) from either the C-lines for jumping or Jazz, Ferro/Negro for dressage.

If you are considering “R” ( Rubinstein) line stallions - I am thinking of two that might fit your mare. Rosenthal was not really what I would call a “hunter” stallion - more like a “hunter breeding” stallion. I am not saying he didn’t produce horses that could jump but he tended to pass on a very good temperament and was very prepotent for producing a beautiful “type”. If you want to improve your mare’s form over fences you probably need to add some Holsteiner blood to the mix. Or some real jumping blood since you basically have a dressage mare.

Rubinus is one stallion. He is by Rubinstein and out of a Rouletto mare. Rouletto was a Holsteiner stallion that produced horses with very good movement along with jumping ability. Rubinus was trained to FEI levels in dressage and also showed as a hunter. So if you don’t get the jump you still may get a good dressage horse.

Rosall is another one. I have met him and he is very quiet. He was trained to FEI levels in dressage and was gelded and shown as a hunter. He was not gelded due to his temperament and he has frozen semen available. His owner and former owner can attest to how quiet he is. He also has jumping blood through his grandsire Castro and Azkent. So he too is a multi-purpose sire.

There are probably more stallions out there but these are two that I can think of right now.

Have you looked at Diatendro? He was bred by Schockemoehle and is now in US. I believe he had to be gelded as had some sort of growth but he is beautiful. I have a 2yo colt by him here in UK and he is seriously lovely. I think he would of made a lovely hunter. Has a wonderful attitude, super trusting and clever about everything.
Diatendro himself is doing hunters
