Stallion suggestions for a Corofino I mare?

I have a lovely Holsteiner mare by Corofino I who I am looking to breed this year. I have been having a very hard time settling on a stallion. She had a filly by Cascavelle in Germany as a 3 year old and is coming 16 this year so I’d like to stick with fresh semen and will probably try frozen next year if all goes well. She has a wonderful temperament and was a successful show jumper. Here is her pedigree: http://www.sporthorse-data.com/d?i=10780722

She is already approved Holsteiner so I’d like to stick with a Holsteiner approved stallion. All three of my mares are grey so I’d like to have a chance of a non-grey foal but grey isn’t a deal breaker (as I obviously like them!). She is 171 cm so has plenty of height, is very modern in type, and quite compact. I really don’t want to go any more refined or more compact.

We have thought a lot about what we want to produce. I’m not sure if we can produce this but ideally we want something with an amateur-friendly temperament and very rideable (since amateurs are most of the market and that includes me!). We’d also be thrilled with something that a professional could ride and even a stallion prospect if it is a colt. Jumping (and eventing) is our focus.

So, as for the stallions, I have basically tried to go through every one on the Holsteiner site. I have inquired about Calatus 2 since he is by Canthus (Cascavelle is by Canthus) but they are only offering him frozen. Even though Cascani is grey, he really seems to offer everything I’d want so he is on my list but their website says that he would only be offered on site or counter-to-counter for same day shipment. Veterinary services are no issue here so I don’t think that would be a problem at all but it does make me a bit nervous that if it did get delayed we could run into problems. I like the looks and pedigree of Concerto Grosso but I’m not sure he is producing exactly what I want. I haven’t found any offspring that fit the bill of what I hope to produce. Plus, I have heard that for the Germans to accept a horse back in Germany as a Holsteiner stallion (I know, the chances of this actually happening is slim but I don’t want to rule anything out) that the sire needs to have done his testing in Germany. I wish his half brother Corcovado at Rainbow Equus Meadows was approved Holsteiner - I really like him. I also really like Quinar but I do not want to produce a hot horse and I have heard that he makes them more compact - however, I do like what he is producing a lot. I love Camiros but his dam is Valeska IV is also Corofino’s dam as well. I really like that he is sired by Contender. I have heard that Ariadus throws lovely amateur friendly rides but I’m not sure we could produce a potential stallion prospect. I wish that the stallions at The Oaks Farm had photos of what they have produced (I suppose I should contact them!).

Please feel free to suggest stallions and correct me if my thinking is incorrect on any of these stallions. I’m trying to figure out the best match and I am finding it very difficult!

Cascavelle is by Cantus but he breeds from his Calando I dame and is a completely different type of stallion then the ones you have listed. Also, none of these stallions will make Verband eligable foals, except Camiros, and he is a dressage stallion and you wouldn’t ever breed Camiros to a Corofino mare. Concerto Grosso was never bred to good Holsteiner mares in the begining, so it will be hard to find ones to look at. He is a very good stallion, but again not like Cascavelle. Quinar is, but will likely not breed you an ammy mount.

Best of luck

Tim

Corofino LOVES the blood of Caretino and Contender. Look at the new Casall / Contender stallion from 104a that Hyperion Stud just acquired from VDL.

He is from a top motherline as well. Approved KWPN and passed the stallion test and will be presented to the AHHA this fall and is a shoe-in for approval in my opinion.

Otherwise frozen from Carentan , Cristo , Connor , Cayado etc.

Freakin nice horse ! I put my hands on him in FL at the quarantine facility. I see no mistakes.

There is also Cubito, a Contender son since Contender was brought up.

Just wanted to update - we have booked her to Concerto Grosso and she will be bred this week! I am thrilled and can’t wait to see the foal. I did a lot of research and have heard so many positive comments about CG. He really is a well kept secret. I cannot say enough good things about his owner, Rosemarie. She has been a big help and is a fantastic stallion owner. Nothing beats someone who is down to earth and wants to see the foal on the ground as much as the mare owner.

I love Dakota VDL but we will be waiting to possibly use him next year. That way we can be sure he gets his AHHA license and see what he produces (in Europe) when his foals hit the ground this year.

Congrats on your selection! Hope to see you join our breeding family next year! Look forward to seeing your foal from CG.

Cheers

Good choice. You got your Contender blood and CG is a very good producer. He made the champion mare in CA and PA this year.

congratulations and good luck! I am a fan of CG too!

I have had 2 corofino mares. One I bred to cassini and camiros. The Cassini is a gp jumper and the camiros turned out very nice in spite of holsteiner breeders saying I was crazy to do it. She was also bred to escudo I and dream of glory. All the foals were jumpers. The other I bred to campesino which produced a leggy fabulous mover. Im not sure what he is doing now, but he also was great. Both mares were great producers. I love corofino mares!!!

Great Choice on CG. Congrats, hope to see the foal next year.

Thank you, Merle, for the glowing report.

I noticed you commented on Contender; Contender is Concerto’s grand sire.

There are few quality Holsteiner mares out there. Two presented last year during the 2011 AHHA inspection Tour were champions of their sites AND the two top mares in the country with scores of 50 and 49.

It was and still is “crazy” . Camiros and Corofino are from the same mother for crying out loud.

Rose , your statement is inacurrate. They were not the two highest scoring mares in the country. They were two of the highest scoring in the country but not the highest.

The highest was a 51 point mare in Texas and I also had a 49 point Mezcalero mare in VA.
