Stallion suggestions for Calido 1 mare

Hi COTH members! I am new to the showjumping side of breeding and just purchased what I think is a nicely bred, nicely conformed 1.3m mare by Calido 1 out of a Coronado mare who has Calypso 11 as a dam sire. This means she has Cordelabryere show up 3 times in her 4th generation. I am restricted a bit in my choice of stallions as I am in Canada. I don’t want to deal with trying to cross the border at this time. Any suggestions just judging from what you see on paper at this time. Most of the stallions I am gravitating too have Corde fairly close up and I’m concerned this might be too much of a good thing. Want to try frozen with this mare this year and am willing to pay the price for a nice boy with good history of proven frozen. The mare is super pretty- would love to preserve this if possible:) Any suggestions as to who to look closer at would be appreciated. Shooting for an Ammy friendly jumper with talent.

VDL Stud has a lot of good selections at Prima Equestrian in Canada. You can contact Michelle thee and ask for suggestions.

Whats the rest of the pedigree. State it as Sire/Dam Sire/G.Dam Sire. If you know the stamm, share that too.

Calido 1/ Coronado/Calypso 11

I suspect she is a real pretty mover but might need more scope and power. She appears to have a strong topline, which would be in question with that pedigree. However, from the pictures she could use a longer croup, but that could just be the picture. I wouldn’t worry about the quantity of Corde blood, he is an outcross stallion, who is coming through 3 different sires in the pedigree. I would however rather he be on the mare side if you bring it again. This mare lacks L blood and next to no Capitol blood. So Casiro comes to mind if you don’t mind going taller. Cash and Cary is one of my favorites. Even though it is another Corde line son, its heavy on the Landgraf. Imothep I think ships, and give you some hybrid vigor, Colman and Untouchable if you want a little spice, but your mare needs to have enough leg for them. Uriko I like a lot, and will double your Carthago, and add lots of leg. Last but certainly not least, I think you should consider Nekton, he wont give you the prettiest of heads, but by doubling up on the Corrado I, you will offset that.

I need to stress that I am not suggesting these stallions based on knowing your mare, as for sure I do not. I don’t know her mind, or way of going. However, on paper you could consider these stallions and not make a mistake.

Wow thank you Tim. Will definitely look further into those options! My only issue with it is many of those stallions are not available in Canada. Would Indoctro be a consideration for her (as far as you can tell on paper)? I get Capitol in there then which is an idea that I like. Also…more Corde through the two Caletto sons.

Also was mildly considering Van Gogh to get L blood, keep the pretty head and hopefully good basic gaits but I hear his semen isn’t great Thoughts?

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I bred my Calido 1 mare to the young stallion Jethro Tull. I wanted fresh, as it was last minute, and felt I didn’t have a lot of options, i’m actually very excited about this cross. I’m contemplating frozen for her this year, and looking at the new VDL Stud book for 2019, I really enjoyed the pedigree and the type and style of Dallas, however I can’t seem to get any responses on the subject of him. I want a stallion who has progeny from frozen, and who has good semen for frozen.

I would be concerned with Indoctro as he is more like breeding with Caletto than Capitol, and I think you mare would benefit from the Capitol. Imothep is an Indoctro son, but shorter in the middle than most Indoctros. Have you looked at Fox Fire Farm for the frozen, she is in Washington State, and I believe ships to Canada.
