Stallions

Hi all, I’d love a colt or filly from AA friendly lines who is more hunter, unbothered, slow and not spooky type.

I’m considering:
Popeye K
Sir Vari (Sir Wanabi)
Apiro

I’d love to hear your favorite stallions and which ones you’d pass on! I’d love to stay around 16-16.2h fully grown- I don’t need any giants so recs on smaller stallions would be great too. Thank you!

I also am wondering what registries the foals will be allowed into? My mare is in the preliminary stud book with ATA (TB X Trakehner)

Maybe not the most obvious choice, but Chaqui Z is said to have that type of baby.

Carrico!

Probably already thinking about this, but take your mare into consideration with which stallion compliments her instead of really trying to fix things with her.

Friend of mine had a lovely filly by Conteros.

I know more of the Trakehner world, but would suggest looking at:
Herzensdieb - Produces very sweet, ammy friendly offspring that are great movers and jumpers. While he himself was a dressage horse, he scored very high in jumping at his SPT and has produced many great jumping horses too. My mare has had two foals by him.
American Dream - younger stallion, but jumps great, puppy dog personality, lovely mover. All his foals so far have been stellar.

Are you breeding or buying? I can’t tell.

I just learned this because I got an OTTB gelding last week out of the Bowie kill pen who has the SWEETEST, quietest personality and I emailed the owner of his sire to ask about height and temperament. My horse’s sire is Jack Milton. He stands in CA now, but was standing in KY. Was a VERY decent racehorse and is 15.3, 1225 pounds. Dr. Gray (DVM) said that Jack has the best temperament of any stallion he’s ever owned and they are shipping semen to polo and sport horse owners who are now riding his 5, 6, and 7-year old offspring. Apparently he passes that kindness on, and these horses are also athletic. My guy is an incredible hunter mover. Super green, but long, low and relaxed movement. The first time I could watch him here after we got home I was shocked. In a good way! He’s only 4, has a baby personality of a 2-year old but at the same time has told my diva other OTTB that he’ll just walk away from drama. You’d probably never heard of Jack Milton—I hadn’t and I follow TB bloodlines, but based on what I brought home, I’m impressed.

My Popeye K baby was a teddy bears and very, very ammy friendly. He was the sweetest horse I’ve ever owned. He was loved by everyone who ever cared for him, calm, a kick-ride, the hack winner and super-sound. He did everything from derbies to packing around my young children. My vote is for Popeye K!

@gradytb, I looked at the website. Jack Milton goes back to Believe It, who is my horse of a lifetime’s grand sire. I’ve never met a horse w Believe It that I didn’t love💗. Mine always jumps a 15 (out of 10) and is often mistaken for a warmblood.

Oh that’s great to know! I think this guy will be athletic, although at 15.3 with rather fine legs he won’t ever be mistaken for a warmblood. I had a 16.3h chestnut gelding that I lost in 2021 who was the same sweet temperament and the most phenomenal mover I’ve ever seen, and that goes back a long time. He was by Noble Causeway, who was by Giant’s Causeway, so anytime I see Giant’s Causeway, especially on top, I’m predisposed to like them. They also tend to throw a LOT of tall chestnuts with 2 white hind ankles or short socks. Roo looked EXACTLY like his daddy.

Jack Milton is va-va-voom! Very handsome indeed, and that was a sweet race the way he moved from dead last to win.

Kind of weird having all the other dead stallions listed. Unless you can still buy semen??

I thought so too! Maybe you can. But I think for TB racing/registration it has to be live cover. If his foals are doing better as sport horses than racehorses, maybe it doesn’t matter?

I have a Sir Wanabi gelding, though he’s not quite 2 yet so he’s not broke. But he’s super brave, quiet and in your face kinda guy. He stands 15h now but he was out of a 13.3h mare (I was breeding for a 15-15.2h horse). He’s very handsome and is a great, slow mover out in the paddock. A big lopy canter for sure that just screams hunter. I was hoping to maybe do some jumpers with him (as I’ve never been in the jumper ring!) but I have a funny feeling he will be a fantastic hunter, but only time will tell!

I picked Sir Wanabi as he throws quiet, ammy type horses and has many offspring on the ground so he’s proven to throw this. I’m sure you know, but he just has frozen left as he passed a couple of years ago (the mare I leased was bred to him a few days before he passed away).

I’m getting older and wanted something dead quiet for myself. So far I’ve been very happy and plan to start my guy later this year or next year (he is very gangly looking and still looks like a yearling to me, so I want him to grow and mature a bit more before I start him).

Perhaps then you might be interested in the palomino Trakehner stallion Crescendo! He is just getting started with his riding career. I saw him at his stallion inspection. Suuuuper sweet boy. Jumps fantastic! He is producing lovely foals from a variety of mares with color.
