Standardbreds In Endurance

Hey everyone! I have been a long time lurker but have been seriously thinking about getting into endurance riding as of late and was hoping you all could give me some guidance.

Hopefully, I will be taking my new standardbred gelding home this Saturday. He’s only 4 right now and still needs some re-training in the ring so I’m looking t take things pretty slow with him while he’s still young. However, I’ve heard that Standardbreds can make great endurance horses. I am an avid trail rider, however this will be my first horse that is willing to go out on the trails by himself. I think endurance riding could be a lot of fun for us and would be something different to do. Anyway, if any of you compete on a Standardbred or know someone who does I’d love to hear more information about Standies and the world of endurance. TIA!

A friend of mine did 50s on her standardbred until he wound up with some lameness issues that had nothing really to do with endurance. Now they just play around on trail rides and whatnot. He was quite successful though and Top Ten-ed several times.

Standies are great horses and can do really well at endurance. I say, have fun! See what you guys can accomplish!

There are quite a few competing out here in the NW region. I know of several personally and would seriously consider one for myself if I didn’t already have a bunch of TBs at home. Nice horses! Enjoy your new horse.

Oh and quite a few STB bloggers out there using them for endurance, if you’re interested:

Thanks for the blog links! I checked them all out and they were pretty cool! If anyone else has anything to contribute I’d love to hear :slight_smile:

Here is a dvd for standardbreds from track to pleasure horse;
(I’ve never watched the dvd so I cannot give a thumbs up or down for it).

I believe it is named Re-training the Standardbred or something similar.

I do like standies. That will be my next horse purchase I’m sure.

Just checked out the blogs and turns out I know the two of them. Erin posts on COTH as NowThatsATrot.

Standardbreds are just so cool! I grew up with them in MI, but here in WA you seldom ever seen them, as they don’t have the trotting tracks like they do in the midwest. They are so often forgotten, but they really are The Other Warmblood.
Check out the AERC website. There’s a ton of people doing endurance, riding mostly Arabians, but there’s a small portion of folks who ride on other breeds.
Good luck! Endurance is great, no matter what breed you ride.

Look at the Australian website http://www.freewebs.com/endurancestbs/, which is all about Standardbreds in endurance down under. Their tagline is "Look! It’s Not An Arab! tehe.

I ride a New Vocations adoptee, East Meets West in endurance here in the SE. He has done quite well and is the 1st Annual High Mileage STB for the USTA and AERC.

So, the answer is, yes! You can do endurance and excel. Terri Tinkham rides a half STB out west and that horse has thousands of competitive miles. They are sane, safe, and very sound and dependable. Go for it!
