Standlee Teff pellets

Anyone try them yet?

Not yet but I was going to try them for my IR pony after she finished up her timothy pellets. Katy Watts posted something about them in her facebook group a month or so ago. She had them tested and was pleased with the starch/sugar numbers.

I emailed Standlee over the weekend-- their response was that they tested their hay field, but do not test batch by batch as they manufacture the pellets, so wondering if their posted results will remain consistent–in other words, how often are they going to test the field(s)? I found tested teff hay locally this spring, and it has been wonderful for my IR/PPID hinny, but we’re in the middle of a severe drought, and I may not be able to get more for next winter (I would love to switch my entire herd to teff), so I’m back to soaking regular hay for the summer to ensure I have enough of the teff for just my hinny next winter. I hate soaking hay, but doing it in warm weather sure beats doing in sub-zero temps in the middle of a blizzard…

i would ask them what the correlation is between the field tested, and the batches produced. ANY forage testing from a hay perspective is going to be an average.

The question is - do they process all that hay into the small pieces, mix well, process into pellets, and then test random samples? Or test random samples of the mixed chopped hay, then pellet it? If so, then while there might be some variance between bags, it should be pretty small.

Do they grab random samples from the cut hay, use that as their number, and then process it all from start to pelleted finish?

Standlee should know that every cutting can produce different results. And while you might have a given field that produces very similar numbers for a given type of hay, year after year, there’s no guarantee that any given year will be the same as the last 5.

I would LOVE to get them, but the Tractor Supply in my area doesn’t get them and cannot even order them for me without me paying insanely for shipping to the store. They come from another warehouse and they do not get inventory from that one. Let me know how they do for you!
