Standlee vs. Dumor Alfalfa Cubes

Have any of you tried both brands? How do they compare? I’m currently feeding the Standlee, but the Dumor bag is 10 lbs heavier for about the same price, so I’m weighing my options…no pun intended. lol

Yes, I’ve used both brands.

There is nothing “wrong” per se with the Dumor brand. I had problems with moldy Dumor cubes, but I think that was a quality control/storage issue at the individual TSC stores, as bags were often out of date or appeared to have gotten damp. I think the plastic packaging on the Standlee cubes prevented poor storage issues better than the coated paper bags.

I’ve had problems with finding bits of balling twine in both Standlee and Dumor cubes on occasion.

Also, both brands’ straight alfalfa cubes are hard as rocks. One is harder than the other (can’t remember which?), but both are so compacted that even soaking in hot water for hours doesn’t always penetrate the entire cube. For whatever reason, the alfalfa/timothy mix cubes of both brands are softer and easier to soak, so I prefer to go that route.

Great info! Thank you! My boarding barn has hot water and a heated room where they can soak cubes half day for the next feeding, so hopefully the Dumor will pass the test. Anything to save some money.

I’ve had a similar experience to Texarkana.

I would suggest that whichever brand you go with to mush the cubes or pellets around once they’re soaked to feel for anything that shouldn’t be in there- baling twine, metal, etc.

Yeah, I quit buying any sort of feed at TSC because their inventory control sucks, so I wouldn’t buy anything Dumor. But, I’m fortunate to have a proper feed store just down the road with better options!

Dumor cubes are like concrete. They don’t break down no matter how long you soak them in hot water. I haven’t tried the other…

I’ve fed both over the years. The Dumor are definitely easier on the pocket book as they come in 50 lb bags vs Standlee’s 40lb bags. But I think the Standlee are noticeably higher quality. The Dumor aren’t bad quality, they just don’t seem as…fresh? Green? Pretty? I don’t know. LOL.

I just picked up two bags of Standlee alfalfa pellets tonight at TSC. Tis the season.

Are you soaking your pellets? My horses much prefer soaked cubes to soaked pellets.

Yes, soaked cubes.

I have used both brands. The Standlee are greener. I haven’t noticed my horse’s preferring one over the other, so my pocket book wins.

I soak cubes in cold water for 4-6 hours. They are always soft.

Update: I bought a bag of the Dumor. The cubes are indistinguishable from the Standlee cubes in appearance, but they are softer and easier to break apart than the Standlee. So far so good.

I’ve given up on the Dumor alfalfa cubes… just too hard to get soaked enough to fall apart. Better luck with Standlee, even though some cubes still need to be broken apart after soaking

I use Standlee if I can’t find the snazzy ones from Vermont, and they’re perfectly fine if soaked long enough. (They are hard as rocks - no joke there.)

Dumore, on the other hand, is at the very bottom of my list in virtually every category, from chicken feed to fly spray. They’re cheap, sure, but they’re also consistently sucky in quality. I’d buy basically anything else first.
