Strange thing that happened is the fact that the German judge Riexinger is selected for all three competitions GP, GPS and FTM, while other judges were only allowed to judge 2 of the 3 competitions.
Bad for Anky and Hans Peter but even worst for the US-riders (and certainly Courtney).

I’m also wondering how they determined the Freestyle judges. Did they draw names?

They usualy draw in three groups of five, depending on the ranking of the GPS.
The judges are normaly drawn for the first test (GP), and at the next tests two of them are replaced by judges from another country. Since it seems that during HK Riexinger is the head of the judges, he was allowed to judge all competitions.

No matter the outcome, I hope everyone gets together and make a public protest over Riexinger.
The corrupt nature of his judging should not go unremarked, even if it obviously will go unpunished.
No wonder Princess Haya has announced she will return to competition for 2012 Games.
The FEI is a cesspool.
I can at least say proudly that as the FEI Dressage sandbox belongs only to the Europeans (ie, there are no North Americans on the FEI Dressage Committee), the dreadful blatant judging at Hong Kong is on European shoulders.
ANd La Withages must be losing her grip.
BTW, I’ve gone to the new, "transparent " FEI website and so far, cannot find a list of the members of the FEI dressage committee, so if anyone out there can provide a list or a link, that would be nice.
Because I plan to write to them about Riexinger and Tornblad.

Who decides who is the head judge? Isn’t the dutch judge the president?? Unless Anky has a complete meltdown I bet she wins…

Normally the Head of the FEI dressage commitee (Mariette Withages from Belgium) is the head judge. But as Canyonoak already posted MW is losing grip on the new Haya FEI. So the lobby of the Germans worked AGAIN. And it will keep on working for many years to come. That’s why I hope that more countries will enter this top dressage circus, and also get a vote in all the ever changing FEI-rules and regulations.
As my favourite groom always say “welcome to the world of dressage” .

So Theo, how many freestyles will we see where the riders spends $$$ for music that doesn’t work for their horse? Every World Cup and past Olympics I see this problem. It’s driving me crazy! :mad:

Music is allways very personal, and these riders don’t use music which you like but the music the judges like. 
And I don’t think that any of the riders in these Olympic or Worldcup finals are worried about the fact that you get crazy.
Ulla Salzgeber who rode to the same music for over 8 years; once stated, “since I have scored manyyyyyy 10’s for my music, why should I change it, because we mostly have the same judges at important competitions.”
Next to this we have 4 European judges and 1 judge from Japan around the ring. So as a musicmaker I should go for the music which the Europeans like the most.
That’s okay Theo, because those that find music that works for their horse and make a connection with the audience will be remembered for much longer than those who picked their music for the judges. That’s why so few freestyles are remembered, such as Anky’s “Song Sung Blue”, Balkenhol’s Spanish freestyle, and Debbie’s MoTown freestyle. If you do only what the judges want, then you end up in the trash heap of history.
Of course I understand riders have to make a living based on winning, but you have to do something that goes beyond the ordinary if you want to be remembered.

But I am a bit “lax” in my knowledge of international judging. What is going on at this Olympics that pertains to us? Has the judging “really” been unfair? Can anyone explain this in laymen terms… The only other Olympic judging scandal I’ve heard of was the winter olymics with the Russian/Canadian skaters and a french judge… What is going on here?

I was far more concerned about the Eventing Dressage judging - and it wasn’t the German or Swiss judges who were blatantly partisan!
