Don’t know tons about breeding but it seems like Lovacres is doing a nice job of getting decent bloodlines out to CA to help support the breeding business there and not just KY and FL (and MD, etc)
I thought Stay Thirsty was another good add for them.
Would love to hear opinions on him. Obviously there’s a reason he ended up in CA, but how far off a legitimate KY stallion is he?
I’ve been leary ever since the year I fell for the Matty G sales pitch
Stay Thirsty is struggling a bit in Kentucky. His first crop (now 3) has produced just one graded stakes winner. Since this is a business that wants results yesterday, he bred only 65 mares this year. There is every possibility that his offspring will improve with age, and he should provide a nice alternative for CA breeders.
Speaking as a California breeder, I’ve bred to alot of these Kentucky cast offs and I have yet to see one of them hit. The leading sires in California–when you count only horses bred in California–always seem to be the ones that started their careers here like Bertrando, Cees Tizzy, In Excess, Square Eddie and Unusual Heat. I think it has to do with the kind of mares in California as opposed to Kentucky. IOW, if a stallion is struggling with Kentucky mares, the mountain is about half again higher with California mares.
The two most exciting prospects in California next year are Danzing Candy and Stanford. Those two check a lot of boxes.
