Steeplechase pedigrees - Orphee des blins

Lurking over from eventer land.

Anyone know anything about the fabulous mare Orphee des Blins who won the 2012 Velka Paradubicka in Czech?

Beautiful jumper and seems to be wonderful - anyone know her pedigree?

Here is a link if you are interested:

Haven’t a clue, but that was a heck of a race!

She is sired by Lute Antique out of Ving’s Road.

Thank you!

Can’t find any pictures of the sire/dam. Anyone have more information about this French Thoroughbred?

That is a magnificent pedigree for jumping. One of the very few Herod lines today that doesn’t come from Ahonoora. You also have the Matchem line through Precipitation, her damsire line. So she has all three foundation sire lines on the first page, which is a very good thing, especially for jumping.

Lute Antique died in 2002 and had 339 foals. He was used much more for SF and AA breeding than for pure TB, per France-Galop, which probably means that he was used mostly for chasing, in part because he himself was a chaser. According to France Galop, Orphee des Blins is registered as an AAC, not TB, although she is in the Jockey Club database.

No Lute was sent to Japan for most of his breeding career.

I’m not sure if there are any active males from either No Lute in Japan or Antique Lute in France. Antique Lute seems to have been the only breeding stallion from No Lute’s French crops.

France Galop is suffering from internet hiccups, so I can’t look up the damline.

Lovely, Lovely pedigree for jumping. Not only is Antique Lute Herod line and not through Ahoonora, but the mare also has Precipitation as her damsire line. That means that she has all three of the foundation sirelines on her first page.

Antique Lute, who died in 2002, was himself a chaser; and Orphee des Blins is listed as either an SF or an AA, although she is in the JC database. In fact, he sired far more SF and varieties of AA than PS (pure blood TB). That generally means that he was considered a chaser sire, since in France (and in the UK) there is no prohibition against less than full TBs racing on the flat or over jumps, but other than pure bloods are far more common in jumps racing.

No Lute had no other stallion sons in France; he himself was sent to Japan for most of the rest of his breeding career. Whether he had any active stallion sons there would require some extra time to run down.

The dam would also be in France Galop, but it’s having an attack of internet hiccups.

Thank you Viney, I was hoping you would find the time to share your expertise with us!!

What a race. Gorgeous. Makes me think we should use some of that skill and endurance in event horses…

Ving’s Road’s tail female goes back to a 1962 SF mare named Scarlet, so VR is registered as an AC as was her dam, who was also a chaser. VR raced 4 times and earned no money at all. She had two flat races and two jumps races. Had 6 foals, and two of them were decent chasers. Orphee des Blins has had 27 races and won 7 with 9 other places. She had 4 flat races in either 2004 or 2005, which one assumes were the equivalent of British bumper races; then ran most of her races, all over jumps, between 2005 and 2009. Had one race outside of France in 2010 which she won, was off all of 2011, and has 1 race and 1 victory in 2012 (the Velka). So she may have been racing somewhere other than France for the past two years and France Galop just doesn’t have them on file. She’s a ten year old; but for some reason chasers seem to last longer than flat racers if they don’t get killed over jumps.

Here’s her France Galop page:P

The Velka is said to be even harder than the Grand National. It’s been won a couple of times in the past five years by yet another French mare (Sixteen) --a lovely little gray mare who (IIRC) won twice and was second twice and third once.

They both have Pharly.

The past three years it was won by Tiumen, who has a most interesting pedigree.
http://www.pedigreequery.com/tiumen He was 3rd this year.

Polish TBs seem to do well in this race.

Viney, here’s you a Polish TB eventing in the US. According to the owner he was a ** horse in Europe before importation. I do not know the pedigree nor if that’s his registered name.

Wow what a race. Was there any surface they didn’t cover? I’m ashamed that I can barely remember the lines to a eight fence hunter course.

I mean, damn, but that mare was full of beans afterwards! Ears pricked, cheerful expression, tail flipping about. She looked like she’d just been for a nice morning stroll instead of a 6.9 km chase.

I’m trying to watch the race, and what is surprising is the sheer amount of flat galloping those horses have to do.
