Steve Coburn's comments after losing the Belmont

Thinking it was a little inappropriate and unsportsmanlike.

Inappropriate.
Sore Loser.
Disrespectful to the history of racing.

Totally uncalled for and shows a lack of sportsmanship. Steve Coburn shouldn’t even be allowed to be an owner if he is that poor a sport.

Totalist was qualified for both the Derby and the Preakness. They chose NOT to run him. That’s horse racing.

Tonalist was not qualified for the Derby.

His wife was certainly mortified. I do agree with his comments, but could have been stated in a more professional manner.

Can you racing people tell me if is the way the TC races have always been (in that new horses can enter each leg) or if not, when was the rule changed?

Over the top, and out of line, but he seemed to just get caught up in the heat of the moment. He could have handled it better, yes.

It was not and was never a rule…salar

Well Bob Costas sure tried to ramp it up with his question to the winning owner. Jerk. :frowning:

He was injured in the early part of the year, thus couldn’t run in Derby prep to get points.
But that’s all irrelevant. They are separate races, You target each one as you wish.
Bernardini was a late bloomer who came in and won the Preakness.
Go and Go was shipped from Ireland by Dermot Weld in 1990 to win the Belmont.

Definitely a sore loser…but it was also in the heat of the moment. His horse just lost the triple crown, give him a break.

THIS!!!

I think it’s always been the same but seems like in the last years the spoilers are worse.
It is supposed to be a test of endurance. What does it prove when a fresh horse comes in and wins it?? Really not much.
The smirk on Rosario’s face was not really sportsmanlike either.
I can only imagine the stress that Chrome’s connections have been under the last weeks. It was a vent - a very ill-timed vent.

A lot of the questions before the race focused on negatives. The reporter who spoke to Espinoza as he was leaving the jockeys’ room was all “have the past six weeks revived your career?” and “your record at Belmont isn’t very good… does that matter?”

Not appropriate but willing to give him a bye given the circumstances.

Bob Costas is the bigger jerk IMHO.

He’s got a healthy horse who will live to race another day.

Maybe if Chrome had been beaten by a head bob he could complain. But he was fourth, in a dead heat. That guy, is a poor loser who was not only disrespectful to the sport, but the horse he represents.

Thanks Katarine. Then I retract, if never a rule then why water down the sport.

Breeding has done that.

Huh? Breeding?

The Triple Crown wouldn’t be worth much as an accomplishment under Mr. Coburn’s scenario. I agree that the vent was badly timed but you can’t really complain about the rules after the fact.

The horse, the trainer, and the jockey are class acts. Coburn? Not so much. He lived up to the image on those silks today.

(Did any dressage peeps keep hearing “Totilas” instead of “Tonalist”?? Hee hee)
