Steward's scratch

I just posted this question on a different board & wanted to ask here, too, since I think some COTHers have Philly Park connections -

A filly we bred is listed as scratched from today’s 2nd race by the stewards. I don’t know her trainer (C. Day) or owner (Plumstead) so I can’t ask them the specific reason for the scratch.

But can anyone tell me generally, the sorts of things for which stewards scratch horses?

Thanks.

Owner not licensed?

Hmm . . . I wouldn’t have thought of that.

But Plumstead was a leading owner a year or so ago & have been running there all along. Unless their license JUST expired & they didn’t renew, I’m pretty sure it’s something else.

Horse’s papers somehow not on file?

It can be lots of different things–ownership dispute, papers missing, coggins missing, horsemans bank. At least that was my experience sitting in the stewards office and overhearing calls.

Steward’s scratch non-emergency stuff including:

Track conditions (muddy, off turf)
Late entry
Also Eligibles that do not draw in
Horse has a temperature/minor illness declaired by the trainer before vet check
Papers are not in order
Trainer’s request to come out of a race and it was approved

In contrast, a Vet scratch is the actual observation of a horse vet deemed unfit to run or questionable to run (ie, after breaking through the gate, flipping in the gate and cutting itself in any place, etc)

Sorry to hear your horse is in training with Plumstead Stables, Robert Seeger/Corey Day. The horse could be in better hands to be quite frank about it.

Regarding the reason for scratch, as Fairweather said, there could be many reasons. Also, some tracks list trainer scratches as stewards scratches and vice versa. Most “trainer” scratches are the result of a track condition that is not condusive to the horse’s ability on the surface or an infermity that keeps it from running on that surface (or if the trainer thinks the track is unsafe).

When a horse is ill or has a problem soundness wise, it’s typically listed as a “Veterinarian” although some tracks just put them in under “stewards”. To be honest, I think the reason for why they’re listed without any consitency is because the stewards are lazy as listing the person responsible for the scratch.

I am totally with you in your sentiment that the poor horse is being subjected to Corey Day/Bob Seeger!!

Bob Seeger is no longer a fixture on the track, but instead the poor animals are in Corey Day’s care…[edit]

Seeger has been banned from the Philly Park backstretch but since Day was his assistant, it’s business as usual. Lots of rumors were circulating as to why Seeger got the boot, but whatever it was had to be fairly serious for that to happen.

Interesting. Someone gave them my phone number and his wife (Robin, I think?) has been calling me trying to get me to come out to their Ocala farm to look at horses for sale. Apparently, they are dispersing. I’ve been putting it off because the horses are pretty poorly bred, but it sounds like they aren’t the type of people I’d want to deal with anyway.

I am interested in a TB show prospect that raced for Plumstead/Corey Day & the comments in this thread came up during a google search of those 2 parties. Please PM me if you have any additional information to share. Thanks so much.

Nothing to add here…

…but, fossiloverfences, I love your screen name! I’m a fossil too, looking for a steady eddie to get me back into riding. I have a couple of possibilities on the Finger Lakes Trainer’s Listings that are speaking to me.

Carry on.

Thanks! and good luck with your search, too!!

GlidenSeek

I was horrified to read this post. I have been looking for one of my horses since July of 2009 when he raced at Parx, came in second and disappeared. He was owned by Plumstead Stables and trained by Corey Day. Corey Day has been approached and claims that he has no idea what happened to him. Since he was the trainer, I find that a little hard to believe. Now after reading the posts that have been written I am extremely worried that he may have come to harm.

His name is GlidenSeek and he would be 8 yrs old now. His last race as I said was in July of 2009 where he came in 2nd.
Please if anybody knows anything about Plumstead or the whereabouts of their horses I would greatly appreciate it.
