I just got a used saddle, meyer saddle, and it has some sticky gunk on the flaps. It’s not fully on the flaps just in some parts, what could it be? I can get it off after picking it with my nail but I don’t want to damage the saddle. I’ve already tried to clean it with saddle soap and do conditioner but it’s still there. Help please!
If I had to guess, probably a build up of old saddle sticky spray. I worked for someone who used it obsessively and it can be pretty challenging to get off. You might try carefully scraping it off with a dull butter knife.
It is possible to over clean a saddle and, rather than sinking in and feeding the leather, the cleaning products build up on the surface. As a natural material, it is safe to use water and a soft sponge on leather to remove gunk and sweat and mud before letting it gently dry and then using a bit of leather balm. A quick wipe with a damp cloth after each use is generally enough to keep a saddle clean. Only do a thorough clean every few weeks, as needed. Leather care does depend on climate so adjust frequency to fit.
If it’s buildup of glycerine, cleaning with castille soap will help remove it. But if it’s just on the flaps, @Highflyer1 's guess of sticky spray is a good one.
