Stinky half chaps - HELP

So my Pinnell half chaps are not smelling so hot these days. I’m thinking the sweaty summer has taken it’s toll on them. Does anyone have any tried and true remedies for getting the funk out of leather? My off the rack ones never lasted long enough to get too funky.

Thanks!

maybe sprinkle baking soda or foot powder on the insides and vacuum off?

Have you cleaned them with an appropriate leather cleaner? Leather Therapy is very good. If leather is cleaned and conditioned it is less likely to absorb sweat (less likely, not that it won’t). You can always contact Pinnell for recommendations.

I do understand the cost of this item. That being said, if they smell bad, you will not wear them…so…risk it.

Wash them in a front load washing machine, short cycle, lukewarm water, with a couple of old towels, and about 4 oz. liquid Castile soap. Protect the chaps by placing in a laundry bag. Remove as soon as the cycle is complete, block and condition. During the drying process, I would recondition several times, and manipulate the leather thoroughly on multiple occasions.

Mine weren’t as expensive as Pinnels, but I used to wash mine in the washer in cold water, just a bit of Dreft soap and on the wool setting. Laid them out to dry and conditioned after. I did this more than once, so it didn’t ruin my half chaps

agreed. I did this more times than I can recall with my rough-out full chaps. I used mink oil on the smooth leather side. They always finished up looking brand new. Shrunk a hair, but that was necessary each time.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just was looking for some real life experience in solving the funk factor. Before I had these chaps I always considered the off the rack ones disposable, so it never got to the point of what the heck do I do with them now that they are funky.

Contact Chuck and he gave some general leather care advice.

My custom full chaps got quite moldy one year. My trainer told me to wash them in cold water with Pine Sol. Worked like a charm.

I’d spray them with Lysol aerosol spray, leave them outside for an hour in the sun and then clean and condition well.
