Stinky helmet problem

I have never had this issue before, but for some reason my One K smells, really, really bad. Short of washing the liner after every ride, any suggestions to help with the stink? I have been spraying it with Charles Owen Hat Deodorizer, but it really isn’t helping.

I keep a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol in my tack locker and spray my helmet after every ride. It kills the bacteria that make the stink.

I also spray inside my paddock boots and my gloves.

One K’s have a liner that comes out so you can put it in the washer.

I keep a dryer sheet in the top of my non-lined helmet and, during this extra sweaty time of year, I use a baby wipe folded in thirds on the brow band area of the helmet. Stinky helmet with salty/crunchy brow band was becoming very uncomfortable.

I prefer a helmet with a removable liner, but this style fits well and is at a good price point.

The CO cleaner doesn’t do diddly IMO.

Second spraying with rubbing alcohol. Kills the nasty. I use it after every second or third ride.

This product worked on my car upholstery after I rescued a stray dog that had rolled on something dead.

I found it at Pep Boys, very cost effective.

It has worked the same magic on ball caps and raffia cowboy hats.

Yeah, but I don’t want to be washing it after every other ride. I washed it, and two days later it stunk again.

I will try rubbing alcohol. The CO cleaner use to do really well in my Tipperary.

Supposedly that feminine hygiene spray was the stuff to use. I remember we all sat around and had a good laugh about that a few years ago during a lesson when I still was doing the H/J.

Does rubbing alcohol affect the helmet integrity at all? I seem to recall something about composites/plastics and certain chemicals not being a good combination. But I could be wrong.

OP, what if you got an extra liner or two so you can wash and air dry in rotation? I would think sunlight might help eliminate the nasties, too.

Give your helmet a spray of Lysol after you take it off. The spray, thank heavens, does not smell like bottled Lysol!

I have a second liner to rotate while the other has been rinsed and drying. I also have had good results with removing the sweaty liner and letting it dry outside of the helmet. Maybe less bacteria that way?

I get good results using Sportzyme from Norwex. I spray the inside of my helmet with it after every ride and hang it in an open area to dry.

I tried FEbreeze then let it sit in the sun if I can.

Now I will try the rubber alcohol, thanks for the tip!

It only happens with my Owens, and the spray does nothing.

Good thought on the rubbing alcohol. Hopefully somebody can chime in on that.

I will have to look into that if the alcohol doesn’t work.

I wonder if it is because this style of helmet has less ventilation holes. I never had an issue with my Tipperary being smelly, but it had tons of vent holes.
